Maggie Smith plays the character of 'Epifania Parerga' in what is easily one of her most best rolls. A woman of Education, prestige, class and especially wealth with an attitude of canny invulnerability.
She's a woman that owns the world and knows it, she has true power in the sense of money and can do just about anything she wishes. She can even go to the extent of assaulting a man knowing that she can get away with it, by manipulation of the court system and a continuous stream of money.
Epifania comes off as harsh, insulting and incredibly rude there are various points in the film where she will make you hate her. Yet she can almost always turn it around no matter how low she goes, no matter what she does, no matter the knot created in your stomach from the intense loathing you'll feel towards her character. It shall never last, For in only a few short minutes she will have turned herself around and made herself the Envy of everyone of all that could ever be.
I hadn't thought an hour and 40 minute long stage film would be all that interesting. I was expecting to be glancing at the clock constantly but after the first major scene of the play (which all takes place in one office) you discover that it's been 40 minutes and there's not an ounce of fatigue while watching such a movie. The acting from every person here is miraculous. A real sense of British acting stage mentality.
It's a highly recommended film '1972 The Millionairess'
There's no movie poster for this one so here's just the DVD cover
