It has been sometime since we have seen our good friend Shurik.
But now he is back in not one but three separate Adventures as the title might suggest operation Y {Операция „Ы“} is the main one which is odd as it's also the last one.
So instead of doing one summary there will be three and let it be known that this is a significantly funny movie and it should be watched before being spoiled by me.
I. Workmate: So you have a drunken layabout sitting in the front of the bus (you know that part of the bus that's reserved for the elderly and disabled) and the pregnant woman that this man is refusing to let sit down.
Anyways he refuses to move so Shurik attempting to do the right thing disguises his himself as a blind man, in an attempt to get the man to move. This works only for a moment for when the bigger man discovers that Shurik is not actually blind. He attempts to attack and push him out of the bus, doing this lands him in jail. Leading to him having to work off his time in probation. It's from here that hijinks really start to ensue as our criminal and Shurik end up working in the same construction site, leading to much public mischief and a lot of physical injury.
Can I just say that I want to work on this construction site, you have a lenient and very polite boss, adequate working supplies and material. With what has to be the best lunch I have ever seen offered to anybody at any job. I mean come on, a giant bowl of soup, half a loaf of bread, an entire meat kebab and a glass of come kompot!
II. Déjà vu: So this is my favorite of the three stories Shurik is a student at a University during a final exam time. He wishes to acquire the study notes so that he may study and pass his exams more easily, he discovers that a certain young woman by the name of Lida (as played by Natalya Seleznyova) has said study notes. He perceives to start reading over her shoulder and the two of them become so engrossed in their studies they don't even realize that they are both there. Walking from the bus station all the way into her home, with many comedic moments taking place between them, even when they finish studying they never realized that they were both together.
The next day they get introduced by a mutual friend thinking that they haven't met one another they start talking and walk on too Lida's home where Shurik starts having a sense of deja vu. Or at least he thinks it's deja vu, this leads Shurik to think that he psychic, it's here at the last 5 minutes at the film really takes an interesting turn. Now with moving camera angles and altered lighting, leading up to a very lovely conclusion involving or two lead roles.
Maybe psychic power isn't real but the infatuation of Love sure is.
III. Operation Y: The film for which the whole thing is named and the funny thing is; it's not really a Shurik story it's more focused on ''The Three Amigos of crime'' the Fool (Yuri Nikulin) , the Coward (Georgy Vitsin) and the Pro (Yevgeny Morgunov). The three delinquents planned to get involved in what is a pre-planned fake robbery where one of their objectives is to knock out an old lady who's a guard. That in itself always seems strange to me, could you imagine your grandmother holding a bolt action rifle guarding a warehouse?
Shurik ends up taking on the guard Duty and getting entangled with The Three Stooges, as you can still imagine a lot of hijinks ensue involving. Knockout gas, fist fighting and a sword fight.
It's during the sword fight that I thought the movie was going to take his turn for a very different tone, I thought they were going to go somewhere very sad and depressing. Luckily they only Built it up for a joke.
I know what you're thinking ''the movies says it's a comedy, they wouldn't completely switched tone in the middle of a movie now would they? To which all I say ''Go watch 'pigeons and love'!'' You'll find out just what happens when you flip a tone.
