Film Summary CXXXII (The Mysterious Mr. Wong)

Our Mysterious Mr. Wong returns once again but not as you know him for you see this is a Bela Lugosi film and this predates the other Wongs.

Bela Lugosi plays an evil Mr. Wong who killed many a man in the search for a type of coin that was supposedly owned by the great Confucius. I'm not entirely sure what he'll do with these coins I can't imagine they have any real power (prophecy or no prophecy).
I'd also like to state that Bela Lugosi does not put on a fake accent for his role which means you get a very Chinese man with a very Hungarian accent.

Wallace Ford plays a reporter who was supposed to be searching for Clues into the murder case to make a good story for the paper. His personality is somewhere between the the no-nonsense semi-romantic private dick and Bob Hope. Then there's Arline Judge, she plays a chippy switchboard operator who has a romantic relationship with Wallace Ford. They have this kind of cat and mouse chemistry between them. There's also Robert Emmett O'Connor he plays a klutzy Irish police officer
in what I can only describe as a very true stereotype.

I have to give this movie some credit for actually embracing the Oriental angle they have fun with it both from a stereotype point and some legitimate culture too. Something the later Mr Wong movies are lacking a bit of, you could take away karloff character of Chinese origin and you wouldn't really changes all that much.
