The internet loves to make things up, such as ''there are no HP Lovecraft movie'' except for the Dunwich Horror, The Cult of Cthulhu, Dark City, Hellboy and Necronomicon: Book of the Dead
(The Evil Dead series how can I forget that)
especially if you start looking at German titles; Germans love HP Lovecraft!
Sam Neill stars as the straight man Ironically in a straight jacket as he has been convicted and thought to be insane.
It's yout typical HP Lovecraft story, sensible realistic man heads out to strange town and is burdened with the realization that his world is nothing more than a thin veneer covering absolute chaos.
Now in the books they're go into great detail about how this affects the man psyche, the strange histories and all sorts of character development but that doesn't really happen here. With the exception of Sam Neill nobody else gets a real chance to shine (oh sure Julie Carmen amusing to watch she does a good job of playing a kind of amused psychopath oddball) but this is truly a Sam Neill film. Whth some fun effects and very good lighting.
I didn't really like the jump-scares, every time they happened it kept taking me out of the movie.
Also there's this odd part in the middle of the film where I thought they were going to go ''The Shining'' root, but that doesn't happen. Bit of a wasted opportunity if you ask me. The ending makes up for it.
