In a lot of ways this story is simple, a young woman trying to find her way in the world, to discover what she should do, if she can do anything. For she lives in the middle of nowhere (Australia) in what is considered slightly above poverty.
But curses and luck tend to come one in the same and she is sent to live with her grandmother, a wealthy well-to-do woman who insisted she gets married to another well-to-do man.
Theres a great confliction that comes over a nice young woman, she has her own independent ideas that she wishes to live by and she has many suitors that could provide her with a suitable and decent life. Both these forms of living seem to counteract one another and leaves are particular woman in the state of unease.
One of the suitors that's interested in her is Sam Neill the most interesting of the lot who might actually have a love for her, unlike so many of the other ones who simply wish to marry her for family connection or just so they can say ''I have a wife'' this is the Victorian age after all.
this isn't a one-sided story though, for our young ladies actions are seen as selfish by her family as every time she puts her self frist she risks her famliys financial future.
At one point her family goes into major Financial debt and as a part of the deal she must work off some of her family's debt, by teaching a group of young children living in what can only be described as a 12 Century Village. It's through this experience that she learns a bit of humanity and a greater understanding of the world and her place in it. Really when you get down to it, this is a movie about a woman coming of age.
and of coarse pepper throughout the entire film is an interesting romance between her and Sam Mills character.
I almost forgot there's a cockatoo in this movie just like in Citizen Kane.
