A romanticized interpretation of the life of Winston Churchill from the mid thirties up until about 1942. Mainly focusing on his political career and how he's the only man to take the job, beat the Nazis and all that kind of crap.
Richard Burton does a phenomenal job he has one of those moving but authoritarian vocies. Funny he actually has a nicer sounding voice then the real life Winston Churchill, Burton comes off a bit more lovable.
Funny thing after the film came out Richard Burton wrote a little essay about his opinion on Winston Churchill, where he said that the more you research him the more you hate him. This was not received well by the general public at the time as he kind of brought up of romantic image of Churchill.
Out of all the people to play Hitler you chose Ian Bannen! I mean don't get me wrong I like Ian Bannen, but he makes a bit of a ridiculous Hitler and that's saying something as the real life Hitler's kind of ridiculous.
The characterization of Neville Chamberlain in this movie is absolutely absurd, he's betrayed as a kind of bumbling goofball.
Yes he gave the Nazis a lot of territory and more opportunity than he probably should have. You got to remember what time he was living in. Britain wasn't doing financially well, it's Army was tiny and the Navy was good but it hadn't seen any real action in probably 20 years. Then you look at the German forces, they looked intimidating they were growing in size and in reality they could have easily destroyed the entirety of Western Europe, thank God for Nazi stupidity and Eastern European endurance.
