Can Evil Dead 2 be as good as The Evil Dead?
To which I'm now wondering if I asked the right question. Although the two movie share the same universe, same character, same design and a lot of similar camera work . They are at the core fundamentally different. Evil Dead is a very straightforward and simple slasher film involving Supernatural elements that evolved out of an 'non-canonical' HP Lovecraft Story.
Evil Dead 2 is a kind of half-breed something between the original Halloween film and Adam West Batman. Although it has plenty of scary elements you're never truly horrified , because you know the main character will never be in any real Danger. He turns into a Deadite twice.
He either has the convenience of the sun to turn him back or his magical necklace McGuffin that belong to his girlfriend. (Now I'll conceived that on first watching the movie the thought of him dying did cross my mind. But only in a, Can they shock us with the frist ending again.)
I also thought that the original cast was more suitable to the Evil Dead environment.
Now don't get me wrong I love the more over-the-top Bruce Campbell . It's the role he was born to play.
Bruce Campbell doesn't just chew the scenery he rips it apart with his bare teeth and interacts with it in a quite literal fashion. He gets to completely jump off the deep end and indulgent in absolutely ludicrous acting. They drench him in ridiculous amount of blood. I don't think this movie has the highest amount of blood in cinema but it's got to be in a top 10.
Evil Dead II might have the best narrative flow and all of cinematic history. If there's one thing Sam Raimi was spectacular at in his younger days, it was pacing for his films. I find it almost inconceivable that there could be a boring moment in Evil Dead ''especially the second one.'' Everything just keeps on moving, I think a lot of that has to do with the minimalistic set pieces. When you get down to it both Evil Deads only take place in one major set . ''The cabin'' there's a few minor scenes of cars and Forest but all that revolves around the cabin. The closest we ever get to an exterior scene is the airport in the second movie that only last 3 minutes . and introduces characters that are vital to the film.
And there is the medieval scene of the very end of the film.
Winch comes about at the climax of the film and is a complete surprise to the audience. That's makes you too startled to be bored.
Also it involves Bruce Campbell being surrounded by medieval knights and then shooting the head off of a flying flying Dimond with a double-barreled shotgun. What about that could possibly be boring?
Evil Dead 2 is a phenomenally good movie. Also the sky is blue and the Russian economy is in the toilet.
