Maximum Carnage The Fairly popular comic book from the early 90s. And hated by so many people. Is this hated by people for good, or is it merely the opinion of one person that the rest of the Internet decided to go with. I find the latter to be more true these days.
So I'm going to do a review of all 14 chapters and find out just how good or bad this thing is. So let's start with the basics. I don't read that much Spider-Man, most of my Spider-Man information comes from: The late 90s video game, the Sam Raimi movies and the 1960s cartoon show. Anything beyond that is foreign territory to me.
That means if there's a chunk of information that's incorrect with a different comic book I'm probably not going to know it. And will most likely not grade that against it . At the same time a continued storyline from a different comic book will not be able to make up for the lack of story(if there should be one) in this comic.
We start off in a maximum-security prison , some doctor wants to rehabilitate Cletus Cassidy the man when possessed by a Symbiote will become Carnage. I guess Cassidy was incarcerated from some other Adventure involving the Spider-Man. Now of course he's going to break free and kill everyone in the prison except for some weird-looking goth check "Shriek" who turns out to be a C-grade villain of the Spider-Man. Her superpower involves a high-pitched screaming, which makes her an even pathetic version than that one X-Men villain who has the same power. For some reason Carnage keeps her around even though he has no reason to. And pals around with her throughout the city. Until they come across the Spider-Man, or at least what they think is the Spider-Man that's actually some weird guy known as the Doppelganger One of Spider-Man's D-villains.
Now we cut over to a funeral or Peter Parker and Mary Jane are in the attendance of their dear friend Harry Osborn who was the second possibly third Green Goblin. I guess this is a continuation of the story from before the Maximum Carnage but whatever. Anyways it's not going well for Peter because when is it ever going well for Peter. And Mary Jane is started to take up smoking again she wants Spider-Man's retire from being Spider-Man for a couple weeks so the two of them can have a bit of relaxation.
It's sad to think that older Spider-Man doesn't exist anymore. Because the comic companies decided a married couple!
Peter was getting some Chinese food for Mary Jane when is spidey sense starts going all Haywire on him. So of course he jumps into a Spider-Man costume and goes on to investigate only to encounter the doppelganger and Shriek. Having a hell of a fight with both of them. Figuring out during the battle at Carnage's on the loose and that both of these people are working for him.
This gets Peter to wonder; Where is Carnage?
Over to the Daily Bugle , where Jay Jonah Jameson is harassing his staff again about one particular newspaper article. Only to discover himself that Carnage is loose. He decides he's going to leave the country because Carnage has a vendetta against him*. But unfortunately for him Carnage is already made it and it's implying that he's going to do something really horrible to Jameson.
And that's the first out of 14 issues of this comic. How does a holdup?
Personally I think it's okay, the dialogues a little heavy in some scenes but the art work is well done and the story has me interested. Despite the fact that it involves lesser Spider-Man villains.
*The Rhino doesn't like Jameson, the Green Goblin attacked him in the movie, scorpion attacked him in one of the video games and I'm pretty sure Venom was after him once too. How is Jay Jonah Jameson still alive? Perhaps he's the greatest superhero of all.
