If Jules Verne was alive to see this ... Well he probably say it was under developed. Because all movies of books are gently undeveloped. You just can't get that character Dynamic down in a movie.
Now I have never read the original novel. So I have no idea how accurate the movie is to the original story. The only thing I can tell you is at no point do they go to Kansas , which is probably for the best because apparently in the original novel and they talked about going to a great lake. I may not know much about American geography but I can tell you right now there's no Great Lake in Kansas.
There's a great earthquake in Philadelphia and a flat Ridge Mountain begins to speak words of scripture. It's this odd Mount Zion kind of deal. That gets the attention of the US government who decides to send up a hot air balloon with four people to investigate this very strange phenomenon. As they travel up their shot down by a ballistic missile from a massive blimp.
And our protagonists wake up and what they think is a boat. There's Dorothy and Mr.Evans the soon-to-be engaged couple the father of Dorothy ''Prudent'' and this other random guy John Strock who's played by Charles Bronson. For some reason the soon-to-be husband of Dorothy really doesn't like this guy, and this is before he starts hitting on his fiance. Now we all know Charles Bronson's the guy that's going to save the day. I mean it's Charles Bronson for god sakes. That's the least shocking thing you could ever think of. He can just look at you and you'll surrender. But there's no time for any of that, our main crew has to go meet the captain.
Vincent Price plays Robur the captain and Main antagonist to the ''main crew'' who he captured . he wants to create World Peace via appeasement, that is appeasement under him. He's going to fly over all the countries of the world and fretting the blow the ever-living hell out of them if they don't disband all their military forces. Not only is this ridiculous and unrealistic venture but I would imagine it be quite dangerous for him. He doesn't have an unlimited amount of resources up on that blimp. He has to land at some point and eventually if the world's United against him they would almost certainly destroy him at some point.
I now want to see a movie where Charles Bronson and Vincent Price team up to rob a bank or something. It doesn't really matter what they're doing they just have to play bad guys that go against the rest of the world. I mean who's going to stand a chance against Charles Bronson and Vincent Price? No one that's the answer.
I've got to focus on the problem at hand. And God knows Vincent Price isn't making that very easy. Flying over War zones and trying to drop bombs on people. Getting so close to the ground that is own explosion start affecting his ship. And inevitably leading to his own demise.
The film leaves you feeling a little Hollow. Like you just want to get more out of it. Really it just makes me want to read the book. Because we don't get to see any of the true character motivations . Vincent Price wants to conquer the world in the name of Peace but we don't know why he has so much resentment to the world.
