Film Summary CCLXXV (The Scorpion King)

What's the next course of action after two fairly popular mummy films. A sword and sorcery movie based on the Scorpion King played by The Rock. Yeah it's a bit out of left field but I welcome the change. Having another mummy film would have just been boring. So instead we get Dwayne ''The Rock'' Johnson playing a guy they call the Scorpion King
And having absolutely no connection to the real life Scorpion the first. Not that they should have any connection to that man. The information we have on him is absolutely minimal. He existed around 3200 BCE, was the king of part of what is now Upper Egypt and Isn't based off the guy that the film thinks it is. For in reality there were two scorpion Kings and the famous one was the second guy who came around hundreds of years later. But whoever made the movie didn't care about that. They looked the last mummy movie Saw an image of the rock as a giant scorpion monster and said. ''Hey we can make a movie of Our Own, but we won't have them turn into a monster you'll just be a Conan kind of dude.''

All Things Considered it's not that bad a film. It has mildly interesting action. Basic acting and some decent set-pieces. And it uses far less CGI than either of the films starring The Mummy. Really it's biggest flaws that it just comes off as a subpar Conan film.
So the rock is not that good of an actor. He can say his part fine, he can keep his voice steady and he knows how to move around and interact with an environment with the cameras rolling. But he can never play a character. Anytime you see the rock you see him for what he is. An old-school wrestler of the WWF. I just can't believe that an ancient man living in the cone and world would have that default American accent (or his perfect teeth)
Those same problems with the rock or benefits for Arnold. His accent made him sound like a barbarian fool and his attribute was overly muscular body which made sense for the fantasy Barbarian. I can't remember if he had good teeth.

The story itself is by the numbers affair. Man and his brother run around hunting for money, brother gets killed by bastard King. Big Man vows revenge on bastard King. Big man finds love interests of bastard King , kidnaps love interests, discover shes a sorceress, Fights Michael Duncan for a while and eventually goes back to fight the King again.

I like the whole poison arrow affair they gave the Scorpion King his silly blood problem. And how he use that very same blood to kill the bastard King at the end. But it's a scene that's ripped off from Conan, remember when Conan was possessed by the demon? Remember when Conan killedThulsa Doom and became thenew king? Remember When They Crucified him on the tree of Woe?
In one way or another they're going to rip off all these scenes from Conan.

The Scorpion King is a fairly entertaining film and definitely worth your time if you're looking to waste a few hours on some mindless violence. But only if you've seen the Conan movie.
