Rambles of Anethum III (Sonic the Hedgehog)

It's absolutely fascinating how such a simple little franchise could grow such a big and occasionally ridiculous fandem.
Sonic the Hedgehog the little anthropomorphic Hedgehog created to compete with Mario. Alongside a bunch of other Sega icons that nobody remembers. And that alone is impressive enough, that a character created solely for commercial gain has lasted for so long with a variety of video games more various than just about any other franchise. (Even when that's a bad thing.) I think Sonic the Hedgehog might be the perfect definition of Yin and Yang fandom. For every good thing you can say there's something bad (and in reality the majority of it's just kind of moot.)
And above most other modern fandoms it has longevity Predating the established Internet*
And you've got to admire the dedication some of these fans have towards the little blue Hedgehog. He's constantly craps on their face with continuously bad games and sub par television day-views and yes they stand up every time and say ''please give me more.''
I would say that would be a bad thing as this fandom keeps dishing out money towards a franchise that really shouldn't exist. (At least not in the video game). But sometimes I think that's unfair because the Sonic the Hedgehog games wayn back and forth.
One year they'll make a Brilliance game and then they'll take that great game, throw it out the window and start from scratch again. Only to end up with some sub par 3D animated hunk of garbage that nobody thinks is good. Except for the weirdest branch of the fans. Really I think that's the universal problem with the Sonic games they can never commit.

And now I think I sound like a hypocrite. Because the big thing I push for in any franchise in any medium is diversity. The ability to constantly try something new and not just rely on the same crap over and over again. But maybe Sonic should stop trying to be so diverse, maybe find that one nice thing that actually works for you and stick with it for a few years.
Or better yet maybe just take a break and don't bring up any Sonic games for maybe 2 to 5 years. Let the public had a little chance to breathe. Give the developers enough time to actually make a solid video game .
I just want you to try and imagine a 3D Sonic game that isn't filled with bugs. A game that functions well I could hold its own against another franchise. Every time I bring up a good Sonic game I always feel like I have to add a little asterisk to the side. With a little disclaimer saying: ''In comparison to other Sonic games.'' Because 95% of the time a good Sonic game compared to other videogames is just sub par (if not flat-out bad). There's a slight exception to ''Sonic 3 & Knuckles'' which I think mechanically is the best working of their games**.
I know a lot of people out there that would like to support Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is being a good game. But I always found the camera didn't move fast enough to keep up with your little character. And it was a game of trial-and-error. It was almost impossible to ever beat a level without dying.
And skill was irrelevant on your first run. It didn't matter how well you were at jumping or platforming, you eventually would crash into some unseen Spike pit or get hit by a fireball. You weren't expecting to run headlong into a big thing of water that you can't escape from.

Then there's the Sonic comics. Which generally overall I think of pretty good. Some of them have really stupid stories but then what are you expecting. It's a story about a blue Hedgehog in his silly orange two tailed fox fighting a fat man named Robotnik. I go more in-depth about them. But I might review Sonic comics at some point. So I'll leave it till then

The name Eggman is already been taken. Vincent Price is the Eggman and everyone should know that.

I know some people like the crap on the Sonic fandom because of all the weird fetish porn crap that comes out of it. But unfortunately every fandom and every thing on the web has that problem. Even Cheburashka is not safe from the internet's disgusting arm of destruction. There is no hope!

And yet despite all my bad-mouthing and all my insulting of the games. I do kind of enjoy seeing them. They exist in their own little world, they don't have any real logic to them. Everybody complains about the level design. But what do you want! The ramps, many loops and the ridiculous looking cities all work really well for Sonic. (And his dorky Little Friends). And if nothing else they've always had a creative edge to them. Whoever does the art design for the Sonic is having a field day. They can just make anything they want and nobody can judge him.

In short it's a dumb fandom, but it's fun enough.

*August 6th, 1991 to about 1995 is where the modern-day internet was born. It was a time when the British and American servers were starting to Interlink . And the internet as we knew it became open to the General Public. Though the internet as we know it today at least in my opinion doesn't start coming around until 2003 this is the time when most people were starting to regularly use the internet and it wasn't considered a strange anomaly for the Nerds.
**Oh and the Sonic All-Star Racing game. Which is a perfectly serviceable kart racing game based off the Mario series. It's pretty much just a re-skin but it plays perfectly fine and is a game I'm actually decent at.
