The first and most daunting thing about this particular comic is the picture of Jay Jonah Jameson. He's drawn in such an odd way as to resemble a Japanese cartoon. The way his eyes look, the openings of his mouth . it just doesn't become him.
So I've had a bit of a running joke with my blog that these Comics introduced characters far too often and that it becomes over cluttered. And this is only half true. for the most part they never introduced more than one character a comic and they would do a particular task and disappear for a few others. But in this comic it's gotten a little too ridiculous.
We have Molten-Man, Iron Fist and some other random guy who I don't even think is a superhero. But people treat him like a superhero. I guess because he saved ''Peter Parker's still alive dad'' and his Aunt May. That's the worst part about all the characters being introduced in this comic, they're all part of a Side Story. They're not part of the meat and potatoes that is Spider-Man and his friends fighting Carnage and his Goons.
And that is probably the best news about this comic. The main story is still fairly entertaining. Carnage and his friends went back to the old orphanage where Carnage grew up. Back when he was just Cletus Kasady. The dorky kid who got beat up by a bunch of other kids and apparently had a super abusive father (Or possibly a strange Headmaster) who looks a bit like Hugo Strange from the Batman series ''Only he has hair''.
It's not much of a back story and if it's anything like other Psychopaths characters it's probably not even true. But Carnage doesn't seem to be all that bothered about it, even when he's captured by Spider-Man and his friends who ambushed him.
We get a big old fight and Spider-Man and his friends are finally starting to put a dent in Carnage. It's not much of a dent and it was acquired by stolen merchandise. But they are able to hurt him.
Carnage is very happy in this comic. Not only is he trapped the people who were trying to trap him. But he's becoming even more amused that their morality is broken to such an extent that they resorted to thievery and manipulation to try and beat him. And all it's really doing is making Carnage more powerful as he can't really be defeated anymore. The Symbiote alien at this stage has binded with him. Thus creating a interconnected being that cannot be Defeated. He can only really be killed and that's only if you can break down the Symbiote enough so as only Cletus kasady remains. Which they are able to do with a combined effort of the Sonic gun and Firestar's magnetic power beams.
We even get a panel or venom one stroke away from finally ridding the world of the scourge that is Kasady. But he stopped by Spider-Man who still has a glimpse of humanity within him. Claiming that killing Carnage will only make them the monster. Funny enough the person that brings Carnage back to full power is Shriek. She goes up to him in his human form, smashes his face in with her fist and demands him to grow up and become strong again.
I guess this is what makes Carnage truly happy. He's able to rejuvenate himself, thus bringing him back to his former power.
The story in the comic is a bit minimal. It's really just a fight fest. With the exception of Carnage's back story and a B story involving the people of New York trying to attack Peters parents .
The art Direction in this particular volume is quite good. Lots of hard-hitting action and explosive shots. Including one interesting scene of Venom using the Sonic gun (it's showing that it's also destroying him to a small degree.)
I don't really like the part of the story where the city is starting to crack down and destroy itself. I mean sure in reality if you had a bunch of psychopaths running around causing mayhem you'd get mayhem in other parts this city from people looting. But the reality is most people would just lock themselves up, grab a shotgun and refused to leave the house. Probably hoping the military will come in and blow them away with cannons.
But then the military industrial complex of modern America doesn't exist in the Marvel Universe. Their military is sub par and a lot of them loaded down with strange laser weapons that only seem to hurt people. (At least in the cartoons.) The reality is; ''It doesn't matter how strong some of these superheroes are with their sonic beams, magnetic power and lightning bolt protruding from their hands. Carpet bombing from a Boeing XB-15* or an Apache attack helicopter loaded with AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles would level just about any superhero. The only exception are the invulnerable Superman types. But there's few and far between. Hell in some Comics they even join the Army.''
Also are funny vampire Man shows back up for the fight. I guess it's night time?
*Yeah I know it's a plane from the 1930s. That's all you would need to take down some of these freaks.
**I spelled the word Carnage wrong on both links below. Good job me! Doesn't matter that much they still work.
