My introduction to the My Little Pony franchise came through this comic.
The cover captivated me at the time. There's something so amusing about seeing a large unicorn with wings standing upon a hill of coffee, saying with Wilds aspiration; "I Think I Can Fly."
So there's a Magical Kingdom ruled by two fairly large unicorns in a kind of ''Diarchy'' system.
Both the large unicorns represent two of the most predominant icons in the Kingdom. The white unicorn represents the Sun, why'll the dark blue unicorn represents the Moon.
Although the whole dual monarchy is a bit of a scam. It's pretty well indicated that the Sun unicorn is the one that actually runs things, while the other unicorn basically lies around and does nothing*. I think she's supposed to rise the Moon but from my understanding the sun unicorn was doing that for a thousand years on her own. I guess it doesn't really matter. It's a show about marshmallow horses, how much information do you need.
So our story opens with the two unicorns having a conversation. The blue one claiming that her and her esteemed guard wear fighting Manticores and it some point found a group of raccoons resting in the garbage can. The white unicorn talks about how her coming day will be involved heavily in the bureaucracy of running the country. They get into a debate over whose job is technically more difficult. The sun horse tells the Moon Horse that although fighting monsters is its own difficulty. It's can't hold a candle to the copious amount of work involved in bureaucratic monarchies.
And this starts the typical; ''Will I bet I can do your job better than you can do mine'' competition. Where the sun horse decides to let her young sister take a stab at running the daytime shift.
It goes about as well as you can expect. The moon horse is having a particularly difficult time dealing with all the bureaucracy, she doesn't care much for public appearances or playing the diplomats to all the various dignitaries that come visiting to their wonder is capital. She's also physically exhausted having already been up the night prior.
Her answer to this is to drink as much coffee as humanly possible. This sends her off into a frenzy. She's also hampered by this random assistant who constantly berates and harasses her. That she has to complete and finish certain other duties. But it seems Luna (that's the blue horse) wants little to do with any of this and just can't stand both the harsh commotion of the busy hours and the extreme dullness of public appearance.
There was a game of human-sized chess she was enjoying until her opponent started beating her at the game. She took quite the offence at this.
And while all this is happening the Sun horse whose name is Celestia has decided to give herself a spa day. Heading off in secret to enjoy a bit of relaxation. She eventually returns to see her sister off her walkers, near insanity having to deal with all the various emotions of the day. But it all ends well when Luna is allowed to go off to bed and the White Horse can resume her role as rightful Innkeeper of the day. Giving her associate grief about his overburdening of her younger sister with more assignments that are usual for the day.
There's also a small extra comic at the end showing how Luna the previous night had come to acquire her pet Opossum (Tiberius). It's a cute and fairly enjoyable story as she decides over various animals which one is right for her.
And that's the My Little Pony comic. It's very good solid bit of fun. It has surprisingly comedic moments and the drawing style is particularly nice.
It's writing is better than it has any right to be and its colour scheme is an exceptional beret of every colour of the rainbow.
*It's a bit unfair to say that she does nothing. She is technically responsible for raising the Moon And she does occasionally engage in battle with strange creatures of the night, I think she's also supposed to Lord over the dreams of all the other magical creatures.
