First thing we have to acknowledge is the incredibly misleading cover. It's a picture of Sonic falling down to what we must presume is certain doom. And Tails chasing after him. But neither of these characters appear in the freaking comic book.
Now I discovered after buying this thing, that we have a variant cover. What is selling the exact same comic book only with a different image .
And it's a practise that I think it's been a little too prevalent in modern comic books. It's hard enough when you go into a comic store or even order them offline to figure out which one is the beginning to a story and which one is the end.
Half the time they don't even put the numbers on correctly if they bother to put the numbers on at all . and sometimes you end up buying the same comic twice thinking that it's something else. Only to discover that it's cover b or cover C of the exact same comic book.
It's not that big of a problem if you can open the comic up and inspect it's contact. Content. But what are we supposed to do with the comics that are housed in those plastic baggies.
We start on the scene of Amy Rose and Rouge the Bat* stuck in a confined space surrounded by strange looking green crystals.
The crystals are closing in on them and they have to smash their way out.
Coming over to another scene we have knuckles (that strange looking red creature who supposed to be an Echidna.) And a recolour of Sonic who they call ''Shadow''. They're hanging out with a bigger version of Knuckles who's coloured purple and talking about finding magical emeralds or some other powerful MacGuffin. I don't know who does the writing for this comic but they gave the recoloured Sonic the most ridiculous lines. There's a part in the comic where he literally calls himself ''the ultimate life form''. What kind of person talks like that?
Anyways the three of them split up Knuckles and his recolour run off to find some magical cave while the Sonic recolour heads off to find Amy and Rouge. Knuckles starts talking to his recolour and they go on about the history of some random troll race that used to run the world. They both talked about how they're the only ones of their kind and how they have to stick together to stop the other evils from coming about. Or some such nonsense.
Anyways it turns out the recolour of Knuckles is actually a magical wizard man who looks a lot like the witch from the ''Tetris Attack'' game on the Super Nintendo . It was the second last boss you had to fight as Yoshi. It takes the shards of what are called ''The Master Emerald'' from Knuckles and proclaims that it's going to become the most powerful thing that ever was. And for some strange reason the character Amy knew about this magical wizard and knew that the purple recolor was a fake. So now they have to run off to save Knuckles from the magical wizard. They all meet up in the end with the magical wizard behind a brick wall. And now they're being confronted by a giant robot that was chasing them from earlier.
Having never read any of the other Sonic Universe comics I can tell you that it's a big old mess. If they were hoping to get new readers by having this be somebody's first comic. Then they probably lost out. Because I don't have a clue what's going on and I have absolutely no investment in any of these characters. The only one I kind of like is Amy. She acts a little bit more sensible than the rest and doesn't look quite as stupid as any of them either.
I always felt sorry for Amy's character. All she wanted to do was spend some time with Sonic and all he ever did was run off on her. The guys a real jerk and I would like to say that Amy should try to do better. But looking at all the other characters in this stupid Universe, Sonic is sadly the best option. Tails is like half her age. All the other characters have the personality of a dried-out lemon.
Maybe Amy should just start batting for the other team and try to go out with Rouge . At least she has a bit of a personality it's mainly sassy but that's still better than nothing.
Also the God Isis exist in their world. Only they spell her name with an X so you get ''Ixis'' instead. I don't know why they spelled it this way, the last I checked the ancient Egyptians didn't trademark the name. And even if they did, it was a different alphabet. What do they care.
*Why I remember the names of these characters I'll never know. But I also never know is how Rouge the bat got past parental groups. She's an anthropomorphic bat with breast that are half stuck out. Who thought that was a good idea.
