So the cartoon show 'Reboot' is (for lack of a better word) being Rebooted.
A chunk of the ReBoot fandom has reacted pretty poorly to this whole thing. Honestly I think most people are in the same category as me. Those who enjoyed the show but are probably indifferent to anything that happens now. What's it been, 20 years since that show was on.
It doesn't matter what they do. They're not going to recapture what the show was. For one thing they can't put the childhood Wonder back into my head of seeing this early CGI technology being used in such an interesting way. I mean this predates Toy Story by a little bit and it was a lot more readily available to see. They also can't recreate the old Internet. Nobody looks at the Internet and thinks of it as a billion tubes with numbers and bits of data just floating around in physical form. I don't even know if people think of the Internet is a travelling circuit anymore. It's also instantaneous now.
The Wonder behind this new technology just isn't there anymore. I mean the Internet as we know it was more or less created in 1995 with a kind of Proto version existing for about 15 years before that. ReBoots right there during the transition when the Internet is still a new mysterious item and it's only just recently been introduced to the general public as a tool they might be able to use.
Also dial-up made Internet sound scary and mystifying like a universe of constant chaos and bewilderment. The very thing the TV show utilise so well. Where as the modern Internet looks like something out of Wall-E. It's all clean and streamlined, fast and easy to use. And assuming you're not a complete and utter buffoon you should be able to avoid basic viruses.
Also you just can't bring back those original characters. We're not going to see Enzo, Dot Or Bob. It's just not going to happen. For one thing the kids that played Enzo are long grown-up at this point and I have no idea what the rest of the voice cast is doing some of them might not even be around anymore.
Which means having an entirely new cast is the logical way to go. But why I have to be a bunch of high school kids.
I mean I know the reason for it, the people who make the show assume that the kids watching the show want to see people their own age. Somebody they can identify with. The original Reboot did this to with Enzo. But here's the funny thing. Kids don't want to watch shows about other kids most of the time. They want to see cool and adult characters. Because kids don't want to escape into a fantasy world where there still a kid, they want to see themselves as the amazing hero, the person who goes out in the world. But that can't be. We're stuck with these dorky looking kids who are supposed to be totally ''edgy'' and ''cool'' (I'm assuming)
There's somebody that you can ''identify'' with. Oh sweet merciful Christ how I'm sick of that old story arc.
It's an Escapist fantasy!! Have some fun with it, push new ground, make the protagonist a really old man who has a penchant for collecting socks or something. Just give us something new. For god sakes make the main character Buddha and he has to travel through the Two Worlds all the time. How cool would that idea be, turned out Nirvana isn't some metaphysical universe beyond comprehension of man. But it's actually just the universe inside a computer. Or you can do the whole Matrix thing and have us inside the computer within another computer that continuously exist within other computers. Anything more interesting than just: ''Dorky kids at school who turn into superheroes and fight other people.'' If I want that kind of a story I go back to Power Rangers. It's been done.
But then a focus testing committee didn't tell them to make that show. They told them to stick with what they know, to create another show that looks just like all the rest.
Never take risks, never pushed the boundaries, just do the same thing over and over again. It's literally the opposite of what ReBoot was. And maybe that's the reason people are so upset about it. I was indifferent when I started talking about this, but the more I prattle on the more bothered it makes me. Kids don't deserve this Lane basic crap. They deserve something more interesting, and it's my generation that's most likely making this show and they're not giving them anything thought-provoking or visually stimulating.
Nope, instead we just get a show that's meant to be a basic cash grab. Something that can make a quick Buck really soon and then be forgotten about almost immediately. It's almost definite that this will have one season then cancelled. Because of a lack of Interest from both the hardcore fans of the original show and more importantly from the kids who are watching it today.
It'll Fade Into the background buried under time. Like a Game-cube descending from the heavens down onto the computer Mainframe with the user inevitably winning and wiping out all that remains. left with nothing more than those strange little Rainbow slug things (Nulls) that are supposed to be bits random data from the ones conscious programming.
One final Theory, somebody wanted to make a Tron theme show. But can't afford Disney steep Financial price. So they found a series that was Far cheaper and vaguely connected in the same realm, took their name and applied to their show.
Just look at this picture (below). These look like Tron costumes particularly from the new Tron film. I don't think anybody would care if they made another Tron show. The film it self is basic and it's branding that you can pretty much get away with anything you want. Heck if it doesn't turn out just have Jeff Bridges show up for 5 minutes. Then nobody cares.
And here's hoping I'm completely wrong about all of this. And that the show turns out to be the greatest thing ever made. With a wonderful story, great environment and a cast of characters that will be remembered around the ages. I'd love it if this thing turned out to be good. We could use more good content, we can always use more.
But I doubt it.
