You know everyone gives the Punisher a hard time about being one dimensional or simplistic. But at least he's honest. When I see The Punisher I think there's a guy who's going to cause trouble to a group of people who 'probably' deserve it.
Batman on the other hand. Who knows what's going to happen with that guy, bunch of innocent people are probably going to get hurt. All the criminals are going to spend the rest of their lives on disability checks or breathing through a tube because Batman doesn't ''kill'' but he has nothing against maiming.
Really when you think about it Batman's just not honest with himself. He says he wants to protect the world and to make sure that what happened to him will never happen to anyone else. But he never does anything to actually fix the problems of his City.
He just kind of maintain the status quo. Sure you can say that things don't get worse with Batman but they certainly never have gotten better.
In a way I kind of think the Punisher represents what Batman is supposed to be. At least on a basic level, obviously he kills people and his use of guns is very un-Batman.
But consider this. The Punisher is one guy who fights criminals on his own without the assistance of others and with minimal financial assistance. He doesn't have a secret lair filled with every Gizmo known to man. He doesn't have any assistance. You'll never see a little Punisher Robin flying around.
Once again you look at Batman and what does he have. A Robin, Batgirl, Catwoman, Butler, Cat Batmobile (which might as well be its own character), sometimes he has Raz al Ghul (of all people) along with his daughter. And these are just characters I can think off the top of my head. He's had multiple Robin throughout the years sometimes more than one is existing at the same time. Then he gets assistance from ninjas, Superman and the Justice League.
Then look at what the Punisher has. Sometimes he gets a military friend of his from back in the day to assist him, he does have a guns dealer but he can be unreliable from time to time. And he occasionally works with the Avengers. But always as an adversary never is a true member.
Then you have their tragic backstories. Bruce Wayne loses his parents in front of him when he's a small child, traumatic but he's able to get over it (or he should be able to get over it. I guess he never really does). But he still lives in a big mansion with a butler and a bunch of other things too technically help them out. Frank Castle on the other hand is just some dude whose wife and kid(s) get butchered in front of him.
And I'm sorry but that's far more brutal than what happens to Batman. He's a small child with no control, The Punisher was a big bruth dude who should have been able to defend his family and was unable to. That breaks a man Spirit a heck of a lot more. Batman could grow from his experience The Punisher could only really diminish.
I've seen stories where he starts fighting bigger villains, like Doctor Doom or some of the Spiderman gang. And it gets a little too zany at some point. I just don't think the Punisher mix is very well with the rest of the Marvel Universe. It's all too bright and colourful, and dealing with over the top villains who shoot a laser beams in the like.
I do admit The Punisher does seem to mix well with certain aspects of the Marvel Universe. Such as Daredevil, Wolverine and I did read one comic where he was fighting Doctor Doom. And I was actually starting to get into the whole thing. But as we know, the books are continuous dramas that never end. So I never got the conclusion.
Now what's the biggest thing that Batman has going for him. Stories. Batman can go and do just about anything he wants, you can travel to any country in the world you can go into space and he can fight Brainiac if he needs to. And then he can deal with internal problems like having to fight a robin who's gone Rogue or dealing with the death of a Batgirl. Sometimes he fights Catwoman and he often loses against her.
though have you ever noticed that none of this stuff really matters with Batman. His best friends can die, Robin can die, batgirl, and all the rest. And it just doesn't mean a darn thing because they all come back in a year or two.
Batman as a character was 70 years worth of different stories, and development. Yet none of it really matters. Because like most superhero comics Batman is never allowed to leave his status. He must always be a man who's fighting criminals on the street. It doesn't matter that he put the Joker away 50 times and that at this point the Joker shouldn't be allowed to exist anymore it would probably be put under the death penalty by law. Nope can't do that. We might need him for a story in the future. How are we supposed to maintain Batman for another 70 years if we don't keep everything exactly the same.
Technically The Punisher has this problem too. But given that his character never Advanced that much to begin with, it doesn't seem that bad when they reboot them. He's just attacking another group of mobsters. And he can keep doing it forever. Really is greatest shortcoming is that most people just can't keep that much enthusiasm about him. They move on and find something better to do.
which is probably why the Punisher is one of my favorites. Because I don't read comic books continuously, I just pick up a one-off issue from time to time and enjoy the story for what it is. If you're the kind of person that constantly buys the new comic every week that I imagine the Punisher would never be right for you. For how could he be.
I have no idea what I'm talking about. I started writing this thing like 4 days ago and then I kind of forgot about it. And now it's just here. I don't know, I like the Batman and The Punisher and I had something important I wanted to say about them. But now I forgotten, so I'm just stuck with a bunch of dribble about which one does what and why some characters are better than others.
in short The Punisher is at least honest. He killed for the sake of killing, he doesn't make the world a better place and he has no intentions to. Batman claims to be doing the moral good, he acts as if he's improving the life of the people around him. But ultimately his words don't match his actions. People suffer for Batman's vigilantism. And an ultimately makes him as bad a criminal as the people he's fighting. I guess in a way it's two different types of monsters portrayed two different types of ways. Unless we're talking about Adam West Batman. That man is a truly good man.
