Somebody was watching Alien then they watched The Thing and then one of the Hammer Dracula films from the 1950s. Afterwards somebody said, ''let's put all this stuff in one movie and have a really attractive naked lady run around for about 50% of the film.''
And the result is Lifeforce. A film about a bunch of space vampires who travel around in a giant ship inside of a comet that comes towards Earth. They stole themselves onto a space shuttle, return to Earth and then start killing a bunch of people to collect their literal Souls.
The female space vampire uses Steve Railsback as a type of catalyst. She uses the guy for information and sometimes just screws around with him too. She decides to possess Patrick Stewart at some point just because she can, and then we get this scene in an insane asylum that doesn't really have a point. But it involves Patrick Stewart lying on a bed screaming and having some random guy kiss him on the mouth. I think that alone is a good enough reason to watch the film. Well that and Mathilda May being nude for about 80% of it.
I originally came into this movie thinking it was going to be complete slog and it would get kind of boring in the middle and probably wouldn't be as interesting as any of the trailers made it look. But it's actually a pretty decent little film. The story is fun to watch although it's kind of nonsensical because they keep going back and forth between possessive aliens and literal vampire mythology.
all the dummies in prop work are pretty good too. From the internals of the spaceship at the beginning which are cheap but just well made enough to make it semi believable to the wonderful zombie like husks that reanimate themselves after being attacked by the original space vampires. All of this stuff is pretty well made and mixes with the film pretty well.
It does have a lot of unintentionally hilarious bits. But they're the kind of things that you lightly laugh at when you see them and then you go back to enjoying the rest of the film. I love films that I can laugh at but still enjoy them for what they're trying to be.
I really like Mathilda May performance in this movie. She plays this kind of seductive femme fatale who uses a combination of sexual lust and mind manipulation to control those around her. She's really good at doing the crazy eyes.
I also love the chaotic bit at the end where London is starting to go under and the whole thing feels like an odd mixture of Omega Man and Day of the living dead.
