A bunch of giant-sized Amazonian bugs infiltrate Ronald Reagan's America so they can destroy an atomic power plants to somehow stop Humanity from destroying the rain forest.
But like all of us they became complacent and start buying into the wondrous dream that is Reaganomics. And then (just like us) they start to rebel against the system and end up destroying the very image they were trying to maintain.
This was a surprisingly fun film. I was expecting some a low-grade piece of junk. Something I wouldn't have any interest in or even a decently made movie that just didn't appeal to me (Honey I Shrunk the Kids always comes to mind).
But the vulgarity mixed with the genuine amusement of giant bug costumes is just too fun to pass up. It's like someone took Mars Attacks, The Fly And Leave It To Beaver than mix them all together.
This definitely falls into the spoof territory. But not have any particular movie but more of an entire genre of movies. All of those Middle America ''look at our perfect family, but we actually have internal foibles that we have to deal with'' kind of scenarios.
It's most certainly worth the watch.
I don't know what's more amusing, the bugs attempt at what they think is normal human behaviour.
Or the degeneracy of their perceived personas as they become more involved in the human world.
and airhead. The daughter got pregnant, dropped out of school, turn to a lesbian relationship and gave birth to some sort of hybrid mutant bug human baby.
Then on top of all of this there's another group of bugs disguised as humans coming up from Brazil to Aid in the Insurgency to destroy the U.S. town. Led by their Queen and then on top of all of this there's another group of bugs disguised as humans coming up from Brazil to Aid in the Insurgency to destroy the u.s. town. Led by their Queen (Dabney Coleman)
Who took on the role of Queen in a more, let's say. Fabulous sense. And I really love that imagery. The queen of a colony of bugs (even though these bugs shouldn't have a queen as they look like they're mantises but whatever.)
It's supposed to be big, strong and firmly in charge which Coleman plays well. But because he's also the queen gets to dress the part. I like to think that the bug simply looked over the word 'Queen' in the English language and saw all the ritzee imagery of the Victorian age than decided to dress him up as such. Either way it makes for a very fun contrast as he goes around and half the movie in various forms of drag.
Nitpick moment:
In beginning of the film there's this overhead shot of a forest being destroyed by a logging Company. And about 7 seconds in you can see in the bottom corner of the screen the silhouette of the helicopter that the camera man is sitting in to get the shot. I originally was going to comment on this at the beginning of the blog.
But ultimately decided to stick it into the nitpick category because the rest of the film proved to be really good. And this one tiny little accident isn't worth denigrating a film over.
