Kirk's a hyper-intelligent renegade, Spock is a hyper intelligent half-vulcan. And Bones is a guy who sounds like he lives in the mid-twentieth century. Can these three ever get along?
Kind of? Everything feels a little artificial. And I just can't believe that these people really would be friend,s especially Kirk and Spock. Who within the entire Adventure might have about 30 minutes of personal time between them (not counting old Spock).
Oh the amount of people displeased with this movie when it came out.
I can kind of understand their frustration. It flips Star Trek on its head and made it into something a bit more action orientated and kind of schlocky. But before you belittle this film for any of its problems just remember that the last Star Trek movie before this was ''Star Trek Nemesis''. And I can tell you right now that this movie with all of its problems is leagues above any of the Star Trek generations films.
It's better acted, it's better paced and it feels like it has some honest-to-god energy in it. I mean what were they supposed to do with Star Trek. Try to make a Deep Space 9 movie or God forbid Voyager? We all knew none of that was going to happen. And I think most of us knew that we would never get an old-school Star Trek movie ever again. It's just not the way to market of film like this anymore. You have to hit big and aim for a large audience. A group of people who like action and adventure. Something like Star Wars.
And while we're on the topic of Star Trek's adversary
I prefer this remake of Star Trek to the Star Wars reboot that came out a few years ago.
There are little things in the new Star Trek movies that kind of bother me. Like some of the cliche lines, or the incredibly boring and useless villain. But at the very least I wasn't bored out of my mind watching this film. I can't say the same for the new Star Wars movie that came out.
So there are a few minor little things that bother me about the movie but ultimately don't harm it in anyway. I figured I might as well list them off. People love deconstructing film. Even though this is a major Hollywood production and it doesn't really matter, because it wasn't really made with anyone's artistic vision in mind. It's just a massive franchise that makes a lot of money and if some art should also come out of it then all the better.
Why does Earth have Country Roads? I'm not talking about massive highways or perhaps maintenance roads that are needed for major Machinery that can float. I'm talking about modern 20th century looking farm roads and even some gravel and dirt roads on the side. Most small Vehicles tend to float and I assume anyone else is probably flying in a ship. Were they only designed with Kirk and the antique car in mind*?
Kirk and Spock lost their family members to the same man.
What kind of gibberish is this? It seems like a something that would happen out of a comic book. Your lives were intertwined young children as an evil man brought despair to both of you.
I thought everyone was exaggerating the lens flare problem. It didn't seem all that bothering to me at first. But about 40 minutes into the film right where the real action starts. You start to notice it, first of out of the corner of your eye then directly in front of your eyes. so ultimately none of this matters.
These are but knit picks in an otherwise okay film. My only big problem with the movie outside of some shaky character development is the incredibly lame main villain. Nero is such a boring and interesting guy. Who's back story is kind of complicated and hard to follow. It's not Intense or sophisticated it's just why'll you're watching the rest of this movie and trying to pay more attention to the main characters and the fun action there's the silly space future story going on involving romulans and a planet that may or may not blow up.
And you start to wonder in the end if the main baddy is all that interested in his actual plot. He has Captain Kirk at his disposal and could kill him with little effort. But he decides to throw him around and then flat-out ignore him to deal with another problem. Why don't you shoot the guy and be done with it?
Oh you have some sort of personal connection to the man. Because you have a personal connection to Spock. Well that's all well and good but these two people are interlinked with everything. What you going to do if you come across the fragments of a broken champagne bottle in space and then stop and lose your mind because you realise it was the bottle that christens the new Starship Enterprise in the generations timeline when Captain Kirk got sucked into a a space wave and got lost into a fantasy world in where he rides horses and makes eggs everyday. Only to be rescued by Patrick Stewart and is strange Whoopi Goldberg who may or may not have psychic powers. Wanting God's name am I talking about? Hope he comes so distracted by this villain that I'm rambling on about a different Star Trek movie.
That's the only problem with this film. The Story ultimately isn't that interesting and you probably won't remember it a few weeks down the line.
Still it's a serviceable film. It has some comedic moments, the action is okay and it's better than at least four other Star Trek movies.
It's technically better than Star Trek V. But there's something so bizarre and intriguing about that movie but I'd still rather watch it over this.
But just to be clear this is a better movie. It's also better made than any Star Wars movie in the last 10 years. And no I don't know if it's actually better than the latest Star Wars movie. I haven't seen it because I don't care. No matter what you can say about Star Trek 2009 or any of its successors it's still more interesting to me that those boring Star Wars movies.
*That reminds me of that stupid Beastie Boys song that was blasting at the beginning. I know it's a cliche to bring it up because everybody brings it up. But there's a reason Star Trek never had popular music in its mainstream shows. You wanted to create a universe where everything felt a little Timeless. And therefore classical music was really the only thing you could play, either that or you had to create your own music. The second you start putting in pop chart songs from the last 30 years your instantly dating it. The film 'Django Unchained' had this problem too. Atleast they utilise their soundtrack a little better.
