It's time to watch Sam Neill devolve into Madness yet again.
The story of a rescue ship send out to the dismal reaches of Neptune in search of a different ship which disappeared some seven years previous. The 'Event Horizon' a strange concept vehicle that has the ability to warp through time via wormholes.
Much like its spiritual predecessor 'Alien' it's a story of mystery. Discovering why a ship is returned and exactly what happened on the darn thing.
The more the crew learns that the ship's fate the less able they are to deal with it. As it seems the spaceship has achieved some form of sentience.
I watched this movie more for Sam Neill than anything else. And I'm happy to say I'm not disappointed. There's lots of Sam Neill and he's easily the best thing about the film. Laurence Fishburne is also pretty good playing the basic ship captain and straight man for everything why'll the other characters of just kind of there to be pieces of meat that inevitably get thrown into the grinder.
The plotd is kind of interesting. The idea of a ship going in to a parallel universe and emerging out as something Unholy, then having a different group of people discovering the ship and having to learn about all of its folly makes for an interesting premise.
They don't get to dive into too much of it, but that is one of the partial strengths. Our imagination is left to ponder what it is this counter universe is and exactly what happened to the ship. The only weakness I say the film was the really basic action bits that seems Unbecoming of a film of this genre.
The best thing about the film is it set design. From the simple costumes of the crewmen (remind me of the Alien movie) it's the wonderous designs of the ship and its Interiors that really let your mind capture just what it is that happened. Part of me almost wishes this was a non dialogue film and where it was just a crewman going through the ship and viewing every little action with first-hand experience. Let the Mind create its own story.
There's no way that would ever sell in a Hollywood film.
I think the people who made 'The Matrix' movie looked at Fishburne in this and said; ''Oh we want that guy in our film''. Because he seems like he's playing the exact same character. Tho he gets to have a bit more emotion in this movie.
my only real complaint about the movies is the action centric ending. I kind of wish the movie would have kept on with its a surreal tone and we could have avoided the whole 'blowing up half of the ship and stopping the baddie Montage' that happens in so many of these films. But that's just my personal preference. Also the CGI wasn't great and some scenes but it was only really noticeable at the beginning with some of the paper cups and debris scattered around the ship.
Overall it's a decent movie. The atmosphere is fantastic, the acting is okay and the story is just fine.
Can Sam Neill ever catch a break with his significant other in films? They're either killing themselves, going insane or being killed by him.
