Well it's been done. I finally made it to Superman 4. A Superman film with no care, no money and no real advertising either. I'm a massive fan of the original Superman films. one, two even three.
And up until my mid teenage years I had no idea there even was a Superman 4. I only discovered this film because I bought a 4 in 1 DVD of the Superman franchise.
And sure enough it was this weird fourth one that I hadn't watched. And now I understand why I never watched it.
It's not that good.
I don't understand the point of this movie. So Superman reveals to Lewis that he's Clark Kent again. Because he's already done this a couple other times. Then he keeps wiping her mind out which just seems counter-intuitive to me. I think your life would be a lot easier if Lois Lane knew you were Superman. also here's an idea, keep tabs on Lex Luthor because he keeps escaping. Maybe you should try to get into the administration in the United States and convince them not to hire complete idiots as guards. His dumbass nephew (who's played by the Lesser banana of Two and a Half Men) comes in and somehow breaks him out using this weird car that only works because the two guards were stupid enough to go in there. Then nobody comes back to trying make sure that Lex Luthor is still in prison or go looking for him later on.
Now some of these issues people have already pointed out a million times. Like Superman's hair being able to lift up a 10000 pound weight but also able to be cut by a simple pair of scissors. I mean it's silly but who gives a darn.
Now personally I'm not that bothered by it. It's silly but it gets us to a plot point where Lex Luthor creates the ultimate nuclear man. And then there's other things that people complain about that don't make any sense to me. Like the newspaper headline saying Superman tells kid to drop dead. I've seen so many people complain that this is a completely inaccurate headline. Or they not watching the last 20 minutes of the movie or the Daily Planet got taken over by a smut magazine or they purposely make bad headlines.
Part of me wants to complain about them being repetitive. Having Lois Lane and Superman and their little romantic get together and discovering each other again. And I am kind of annoyed about that. You played this Pony twice now. It's either time to move on or not bother. And I'd like to be more upset about it but then I consider this is the fourth movie. Technically V if you want to count Supergirl. Which is a big reason why this all fell apart to begin with.
what saddens me the most is the potential. I don't think this movie would have been great. I don't even think it would have been all that good. It had budgetary problem and script issues they almost didn't get back some of Their Own cast. But the idea that Lex Luthor would have profited off of Superman's zero solution to the atomic bomb problem is just such a good idea. You don't need an atomic man. Just have Lex Luthor literally rearming the world and then having to deal with Superman who's trying to stalk him. There's so many clever ways you could have done that. The setup could have been great, Lex Luthor going to the Soviet Union the United States telling them everything they want to hear blaming the other side for their problems. Playing off of real life politics and still having that Gene Hackman fun.
Honestly if I was to recommend this movie. It would be with the commentary with Mark Rosenthal on it. Who doesn't try to apologize for the film or try to pretend that it was anything better than it was. But just gives you some basic facts and tries to piece together exactly what happened with this movie. He's more entertaining than the film itself and you're left thinking; ''At least I get this out of it''.
So there were these deleted scenes for Superman involving Lex Luthor's original nuclear man. And he says dim-witted Otis like character. Who's 20 times more entertaining than what we actually got.
