This movie has so much going against it. So you start out with the fact that you're a sequel to A semi popular film. This means there's no buildup and no establishment. People come into this film already expecting characters well-developed. But a lot of that gets retrofitted when Spock tells off Captain Kirk to his superiors for breaking the prime directive. Nevermind the fact that everyone in this was breaking the prime directive and the whole thing was kind of pointless to begin with.
Then we have the lackluster characters who practically get no screen time and absolutely no character development. Rather be Spock and his love interests, Captain Kirk himself or Scotty. They all just kind of go through the motions.
The closest thing we get to character development is Spock learning to let go of robotic behaviour to become more human. But not only is this Unbecoming of his character and done in a very clunky way, but you could argue that he let himself go so badly that he turns into a character that will never resemble what Spock was supposed to be.
But then there's the worst part of all. This is just a rip-off of older Star Trek movies. It's full of references mainly relating to Wrath of Khan but also Search for Spock, Undiscovered Country, there's even a few bits of Star Trek 5 in here. And none of it's worth it. I remember getting annoyed and irritated with what some of the characters did but I don't really remember any of the story. For some reason this one Admiral wants to fight the Klingon Empire with a militaristic Starship even though it's well indicated that if he had just left things alone there wouldn't have been a war with the Klingons to begin with.
I would say this films worth watching if you have a friend and maybe something to dull the senses. But I'd argue that you have a much more entertaining time watching a real Star Trek movie. Watch Star Trek 6 Undiscovered Country. I was half watching that field while talking to a completely different friend who had absolutely no interest in Star Trek. and that film left me of the more emotional state with my half interested mind then this Star Trek movie left me with its full attention. I almost want to sit here and try and act a little apologetic. To say that there's some benefit to the doubt that you should give Star Trek Into Darkness a chance. But Star Trek Beyond comes out only a few years after this one and does everything so well that you might as well leave this movie and just skip over it all together. Watch the first Star Trek which although flawed is still okay and then go right to the third one. This film serves absolutely no purpose and is never referenced again. And you think there would be more references given that the Eugenics war clone people have healing properties within their blood.
