Film Summary CDX (Pokémon: The Movie 2000)

What's the greatest strength of Pokemon?

Adventure, fun, lightheartedness. These are the things that come to my mind while thinking of pokemon.

Instead what we get is melodramatic prophecy. Who was that for? Children don't know any of this stuff and they don't care. Parents are completely disinterested in probably want to drink at the very sight of Pokemon.

You're Jesus Christ! Ash Ketchum. Now get out there, get yourself killed by some birds and sacrifice yourself for our sins. Or something like that.

So the film opens up on this collector guy who goes around collecting rare Pokemon. And the movie frames him in such a way that we're supposed to think he's the antagonist. But he's only doing what you're supposed to do when the game anyways. This is two for two on Pokemon movies that try to promote a message that are confrontational to the very game it's based on.

He wants to capture 3 magical birds so he can summon an even more powerful magic birdie for his collection. He doesn't seem to have any motivation Beyond just owning the creatures. He doesn't want to run the world, he doesn't want to sell them.
He doesn't even seem to be aware (or possibly doesn't care) about the side effects of the entire plant destroying itself via his intrusion.
You'd think with the amount of times that he and everyone else repeat that darn prophecy that everyone would know not to mess with the birds. You're screwing around and now the weather is gone bad.

Luckily for everybody Ash (the supposed Chosen One) is miraculously at the island at the right time. And even more lucky for him (and for us the audience) Team Rocket is also here. Not only are they going to solve half of the problems. But they're going to be far more amusing than anyone else in the film. I'm still waiting for the day when we can just have a Team Rocket movie and for all the dead weight under the bus.
You would think a movie with a giant prophecy and the world ending scenarios would be more entertaining. But there's a lot of filler here. Characters that either needlessly repeat dialogue or stare off into the distance to waste time.
and this isn't some Disney or Studio Ghibli film that has amazing art to make up for a lacking story. The animation is sub par to basic. There's nothing wrong with it but he can't hold a story on its own.
Outside of nostalgia I wouldn't say there's a good reason to watch this. I guess if your a Pokishipper** you might find some amusement as this film makes more references to Ash and Misty being a couple than anything else I can think of.

Still despite any negatives I have to this movie I'd rather watch it over the original. Its story is more coherent and there's actually a storyline involving the main characters that matter. Is it cliched? Yeah of course it is.
Also it doesn't waste it's time with needless Pokemon battles. That might not sound like much but compared to half of the other Pokemon movies it's a godsend.

So you have the ultimate legendary Pokemon who can talk. This isn't surprising we've had this before. Super Pokemon have the ability to communicate with people. Really they're not talking to them, they're just using telekinesis or telepathy (whichever one it is).
The part that confuses me is when Ash and Friends lose their mind over seeing a talking pink Pokemon* who lives on this one Island overlooking the prophecy. And I don't understand why this talking Pokemon was such a big deal to anybody. Meowth taught himself how to talk.
I take into believing that if any Pokemon giving enough training will inevitably learn how to speak a human language.

I still find it funny that I went to the theaters to see this. It was some kids birthday party and everyone was invited to see the new Pokemon flick. I can't even describe how ridiculously popular Pokemon was. Every dumb kid in the world loved it and this movie had some special gimmick where they gave you a Mew card and the stupid coin.
It was quite interesting at the time. I can't remember the original film in that memory but I can remember everything surrounding it. The greatest irony is 2 years later if you were caught dead talking about Pokemon you were the biggest loser in the world. Amazing how quickly kids will throw their own interest away all for the status quo of remaining ''cool''

It's fine as a Pokemon movie goes. It's better than the original, the prophecy story (though not overly interesting) is at least solid and consistent. The main character actually have something to do. The introduction of the legendary birds is kind of cool to watch. And Team Rocket got to do something good without losing their mind at the end.
In fact that's probably the best part of the entire film. The main characters got to live with their experience. Not like in the original movie where everybody loses their memory and the entire story becomes null and void.
The antagonist sucks. He's kind of pointless he's only there to get the plot going and then he's forgotten about. I think he's supposed to have some secondary story later on down the line but green and continuity in a Pokemon Universe isn't like trying to decipher original canon in the Bible in the 200 C.E.

Also we get Ash's mother's name! Delia.
That was never seen before.
She and that Professor have to be in a relationship of some sort. I'm not saying the romantically in love, just that they might be ''friends with benefits''.
