Curiosity killed the cat. Maybe not, but it bored me to tears.
It's Jack Black and some other guy whose name I don't know. Starring in what i thought was going to be a Caveman Comedy.
Now I wasn't expecting much but I was expecting some semi humorful moments filled with weird interactions between people who supposedly lived in the Prehistoric Age but talked with fairly modern accents for comedic effect.
Instead what we get is this odd re-telling of early biblical stories that are done in a non canonical order and happened to involve Jack Black and the other guy for comedic effect.
Now at first it made a little bit of sense. You had the Garden of Eve story as represented by the cavemen people. Jack Black eats an apple; Gets kicked out of the village and the meats up of Cain and Abel.
It's not Orthodox but it kind of works. But then you get this on scene of all the cavemen people being sold into slavery and then captured by the Romans?
Why are the Romans here?
I know when the actual stories were put on paper the Romans were kicking around. But when the stories were being told they were nothing more than a small tribal group living in Latium.
At some point they end up in Solemn and Gomorrah in what I can only describe as a massive harem. Theres a scene where they end up working with the Romans and then one of them gets kidnapped and turn into a golden statue. Then he's forced to rub oil into a transvestite man which is played up for comedy. Because of course it's played up for comedy.
At that point I stopped watching. The film is incredibly tedious and the jokes are flat. It's the worst thing a comedy can be. It just doesn't hold up all that well. The actual set pieces aren't interesting the / monologue characters grind any form of a plot to a standstill and overall it's just kind of doll.
To give it the most minimal of a defence there were a few parts that gave me a chuckle and overall I wanted to like Jack Black and the other guy as well. But there's just nothing to really work with. It's one of those massive projects that would have been better off as a 15 minutes skit. Maybe there's a decent idea in here but it wasn't recognised here.
