Most times when I sit down to watch a film I want to see something new. To experience a story unbeknown to me. But then other times I'm just sitting there, looking for something to play in the background while I'm cooking. And wouldn't you know it but 'Monty Pythonthe and the Holy Grail was on Netflix.
Here I am sitting there (technically I'm standing in the kitchen) watching a movie I've seen several times. As chopping vegetables and mixing soy sauce in with noodles I realise that Monty Python's movies aren't really movies.
They're more akin to a really long television show that's setup to just make jokes without caring about a story.
But somehow Monty Python's able to deliver a story. He's able to deliver the story in a way that feels exact to the genre he's working in. Which is kind of impressive. Fantasy films are difficult.
They all look simple enough but it's super easy to screw up. The amount of good ones out there is surprisingly small.
I'm impressed with just how nice everything in the movie looks. Monty Python is able to create a better-looking fantasy environment the most of the films that he's making fun.
I'm not really sure I like Monty Python's films as movies. They all just feel like big setups for punchlines and they work well in that contracts.
But to just sit there and watch it as a movie, I kind of find it boring. A lot of his jokes just Linger on and on and I wonder how many of them are truly funny to people if they've never watch any of the things that the films are spoofing.
I sometimes wonder if Mel Brooks has the same problem.
Maybe I'm just wrong. After all Monty Python has become a Cornerstone for a lot of people's entertainment. A lot of people have never seen a single sword & sorcery film but they probably get half the references to send films just because of one Monty Python sketch. And I don't know if that's kind of sad that an entire generation of film is been denigrated to two or three jokes from one movie or if it's actually a positive because all that work and investment is able to pay off in one simple scene. Bus utilizing someone's time better to understand a particular medium.
If I ramble on anymore I think I might turn into a lobster. God knows we don't need any more lobsters.
