I have no idea why I was planning to watch this. Somewhere down the line somebody had shown a picture of some silly cartoon thing and another person asked em where it was from. They said it was from this show, so I picked it up and said ''maybe I should give it a look''.
And now I'm sitting here watching it with no prior knowledge as to why.
So what in God's proverbial name is Magical Girl S?
To the best of my knowledge it's a Sailor Moon inspired cartoon that happens to have a lot of imagery similar to that of cardcaptors. Which might be incorrect to say as this show is possibly older than cardcaptors. I have no idea if that's true and I'm not going to look it up.
Anyways there's a Magical Kingdom up in the heavens that's ruled by a elected monarchy. Think the Papal-See only matriarchal as opposed to patriarchal.
This kingdom is now electing their new Queen. And they decide to go with this blue hair girl as opposed to the red-haired girl, do to conflicting interests. The red-haired girl wants to create some sort of superpower military state where she controls everything with the power of an iron fist. I think Joseph Stalin Meats Otto Von Bismarck.
Only she shot down because the Electoral group who's going to put the new Queen on the throne requires a ''good'' person. It's something to do with the balancing of Good and Evil and bringing order to a world of continuous chaos. If you keep going on if it long enough you'll turn into that Malcolm guy from the Jurassic Park movie.
So now the blue haired girl has to go down to earth to endow powers on to a school child who's supposedly going to do all the work for her. And the red-haired girl also decides to go down to earth to create her own Champion to fight the blue hair girls protagonist. Essentially it's the entire plot of the first season of Sailor Moon crammed into one episode. And I really like how they get right into it.
There's none of this mystery buildup crap or discovering your powers over a series of a couple episodes. The blue hair girl literally shows up, tells the school girl that she's the protagonist and she has to go out and save the world. Then the school girl says she doesn't want to do it because she'll look like an idiot. A good chunk of the show is this odd self-aware humour that pokes fun at Sailor Moon while simultaneously copying Sailor Moon.
Despite its cotton candy appeal and over-the-top characters I found myself over all enjoying it.
The pacing was quick and the characters were developed just enough to give you interest in their life without bogging you down in details. And it left on the Cliffhanger that actually makes me want to watch the next episode.
My God what the heck is wrong with this kid?
This is definitely one of those shows where you know all the major characters the second you see their hair. If they have anything resembling normal hair they're probably not a main character. Except for the one really shy girl who almost looks normal but ultimately will turn into this ridiculous over the top blonde girl who has an parrot as an ally. A parrot that's actually a boy in the other world but that's a whole other thing.
