Film Summary CDLXXVI (Cat City)

And now on the second day of 'Cat week' we turn to a film that I had quite the anticipation for.
Cat City.
The general aesthetic is really interesting. The gangster cats and the oppressed mice.
Interlocked in a crime War as the mice do everything in their power to both try and survive the tyranny of the cats and bring down their operations. With the whole thing having this hue of internal Espionage.
Honestly it sounds a heck of a lot more interesting than what it is. This is not that entertaining of a film. And I'm really disappointed by that.
I was expecting a ridiculous over the fun romp of the movie.

The flick kind of promises on this delivery.
It has an interesting art Direction, it has amusing characters and the story set up that's enjoyable to watch.
But it falls back on way too much dialogue and secondary characters that just aren't that engaging. The pacing of the film is really slow and even with the over-the-top art style it just tends to drag on.
It becomes even more problematic when they introduced this Rat Pack group that's trying to assassinate the protagonist. They spend way too much time with these idiots and their voices are just so annoying to listen to.

Now I get that some of this is down to the American dubbing of the film. And that the Hungarian animation shouldn't be penalised for the voice acting shortcomings. But the whole thing does linked together in one experience.
And if one thing suffers so will the rest. Unfortunately what we get on screen just isn't interesting enough to make up for the lackluster audio.
And it's a little upsetting given that the opening title crawl this movie (which was just making fun of Star Wars) gives us this idea that we're in this grandiose universe of cats and mice travelling the universe to different planets and sometimes interact with each other but other times don't.
And there's this whole idea of a bigger conflict going on outside of this world. But with the exception of that opening the rest of the film doesn't follow any of that. It's just a one-off joke that never comes up again.

Maybe the expand on this joke in the second half of the movie, but I didn't sit through the whole thing to find out. I was so disinterested in in the direction this film is heading in that I kind of gave up on it.
It's very upsetting. I liked a lot of the first half of the film. I really likes the eyepatch cat who's the kind of middleman of their Mafia.
All the interactions with him were really fun (especially with Nero) and entertaining. The overall aesthetic is really nice to watch too. But at some point the film just stagnates itself to a screeching halt and all the pretty art in the world can't help but not save it.
