Hyper Dull is this weird little anime that feels like somebody took Dirty Pair and Sailor Moon than tried sticking them together.
I wish I liked this as much as either one of those shows but unfortunately Hyper-Doll has one glaring problem.
It lies to you about who the protagonist is.
You would think looking at the box cover or from watching the intro that it would be the two super power girls.
But really they're only side characters to this weasley little kid we have to follow around instead.
This dorky guy who exists as our everyday bland protagonist who has to try and keep his head above water while dealing with the outrageous Hyper dolls.
Now don't get me wrong. I get why they would do this. You don't really want an entire animated show focusing on the two over the top girls with supposedly ''alien'' personalities. Because it would take away from their charm and ultimately make there unique tendencies kind of boring.
But I still don't see why we couldn't have a better main character*. It's always some dorky weird guy who either knows a secret about the magical people or has a crush on them. In this case he knows the terrible secret that they are in fact not humanoid but are weird space beings from beyond the stars, sent to Earth to protect it from giant monster.
Now the show doesn't actually give us a good introduction into how he discovered this. We only get this minor flashback and then it's never really brought up again.
I do find it amusing that the hyper dolls or originally just going to kill the guy and leave his body somewhere in a ditch. the only reason they didn't do that to begin with is that their Commander told them not to mindlessly kill a bunch of humans unless it's an absolute emergency.
Once again the show doesn't really seem to care about that as when they get involved in monster battles go end up killing a bunch of people alongside a crap ton of collateral damage in every conflict. Often times causing far more damage than the monsters themselves.
So looking beyond the creepy protagonist how does the rest of the show hold up.
Fairly well I'd argue.
The banter between Mew & Mica as they tire to live fairly mundane lives on Earth is quite humorous.
Especially when there are supernatural beings attacking and they show little to no regard for wanting to deal with it.
Most of the time only deciding to engage the monster after their boss threatens them with deportation, deportation or name change. I wasn't entirely sure what his deal was.
It has several moments of cheesecake plotted about the show from time to time. The opening of the first half is everybody at a swimming pool and the girls are wearing these ridiculous bikini outfits that don't leave a heck of a lot to the imagination. But it doesn't Linger on all that either. The more sexual aspects are for the most part basic titillation or sometimes just for a little comedy. Excluding one part at the end of the second half of the show where our protagonist leering at the nerdy girl goose breast happens to be partially exposed because he ended up ripping off the poor girls sleeve from her house robe.
Up to Sailor Moon clone girls beating the ever-living hell out of a giant jellyfish a cockroach and a massive worm who if I didn't know any better had his crowning scene with off by a Men In Black film.
If I'm being honest if this show was longer running I probably would have given up on it. The idea of following that one Dork-a-Ramic kid around just makes me annoyed. But given that the shows only two episodes along you can kind of put up with him and just enjoy the spectacle of pretty decent anime.
*What really bothers me is we have this secondary nerdy girl who sometimes Pals around with the hyper-dolls and this other guy. And she could have easily been the main character of the show as well. She's trying to discover who the hyper-dolls are and she sometimes suspect these two girls of being then. But the show just shoves her aside and only brings her up for comedic moments or when we need our protagonist to be a really big jerk.
