There's so much lovely set design here. If it's not trying to capture that 1960s British swing-style than its trying to capture the very over the top style of those old James Bond films. And is it kind of sad that Austin Powers as less of a creepy guy than James Bond.
I forgot just how much of this movie is Mike Myers making weird faces and dancing around like an idiot. Of winch you get a double dose of because he also plays doctor evil. Possibly play some other characters to I'm not entirely sure. He's kind of like Alec Guinness in that regard you'll stick them in a movie and he'll play several roles at once. Although I don't think Mike Myers ever played eight different people at the same time.
Unfortunately I just don't know what to say about this film. Most people already aware of Austin Powers, it's been reviewed a hundred times. I thought maybe there'd be something interesting to talk about after watching it but it's just a standard James Bond spoof.
It was at a time when Mike Myers career was doing really well and people weren't completely fed up with him because of either bad movie performances or his giant ridiculous ego.
Which I assumed was present in this film too, but I was able to overlook it.
Say what you will of Mike Myers but if he does his job right you can almost forgive him for his stupid tendencies on set.
At least as a person watching the film. If for some reason you ever worked on one of these films this guy I tell you to go up and slap that jerk. There's no room in this world for incredibly self-centred assholes. And yet were flooded with so many.
There are so many awkward gags in this film. I was expecting the occasional awkward set up like Austin Powers standing over a toilet having to urinate for over a minute or that one weird scene of Dr. evil trying to come up with clever antidotes as to how to get money and being told that everything he's imagining is already been done.
But half the scenes of Dr. evil and his son Scott are just so awkward and weird. It's intended on their parts and for the most part it's funny but it takes up more of the film that I remember.
I think what I find so amusing about the Austin Powers films is that it came out at that weird time when the James Bond was doing incredibly poorly.
Their films are becoming mundane and boring and James Bond just looked incredibly out of place in the modern world.
So to have Mike Myers pop up and not only make fun of the original James Bond but show up the new James Bond by making more interesting and well-thought-out films is just double insult.
In a way I almost wish there was a non satirical version of this story. Where James Bond's character is frozen, brought into the modern day and tries to interact with the world as a 1960s Playboy. Having to deal with a super villain who's facing the same problems.
All while being Trampled Under Foot by a massive corporate entity which turns out to be a bigger problem than the evil mastermind never could hope to be.
But that's just wishful thinking and probably would have turned out to be really boring if you had tried to play it straight-laced.
It's still a fairly entertaining film. Honestly that's as good as I could hope for. I had this horrible feeling that I was going to hate this film while watching it. But the amount of energy and commitment everybody puts into it just makes you want to love it regardless of how stupid it can get sometimes.
