Film Summary DXXV (Dirty Pair: Project Eden)

Well it's been a while but I'm finally getting around to reviewing another Dirty Pair movie. apparently this is the most popular. It's the one I see everybody bringing up anytime somebody wants to talk about the show, it's the one that seems to be the favourite. So how do I think it Stacks up.

It does all right. I don't know if I like this one as much as Flight 005 Conspiracy. I felt Flight 005 had a more solid structure and overall just flowed better.
This one has a lot to offer too.

Artistically I think this one works a bit more. There's just so much going on here. Tons of zany designs and weird-looking planetary surfaces. And some of the overall animation felt a bit more coherence to.
It's possible that I'm getting some of that wrong as it's been over a year since I last saw the other film but I remember it being a bit more standard in its art Direction.

The soundtrack for this film feels a bit more lighthearted and fun. It's just such a feel-good movie. Even at the point where you're supposed to be concerned for Yuri and Kei's lives. You kind of get the feeling that they're going to get over it regardless.
That feeling however does not extend over to the character who's accompanying them. He feels like he could die at any moment.

So let's look at the story. There's a case of interplanetary smuggling going on, as a group of people are trying to sell off this incredibly rare mineral next used for spaceship travel.
But who's there to stop them but the Dirty Pair themselves. Or at least one of them is.
For some reason Yuri didn't get her butt in gear and she ends up arriving a bit late. Which leads to one of the culprits escaping and another one attempting to commit suicide when he detonates the suitcase carrying the material that he was trying to sell.
This in turn leads to an entire planetary Resort being destroyed with little to no repercussion on the Dirty Pairs part.

But we don't have any time for that. We have to head over to a small out of nowhere planet (Agerna) where this rare mineral (Vizorium) is being produced. There are These two factions on the planet trying to produce as much of the mineral as humanly possible.
They seem to be at odds with each other, due to ideological values and means of production.
It's this really simplified approach on the Cold War that you think would go somewhere but ultimately just fizzles out in the middle of the story. You forget the entire thing was even there. At least until the end.

Anyway the Dirty Pair are here to investigate a strange attack that happened on one of these bases. People at the base blame the other group of people for attacking them. And the whole thing comes off as incredibly farcical as the Dirty Pair seem to have little to no interest in the case itself. But all the same they had out to do their investigation. That is until they stumble upon a bath.
Which of course they use because. Well. It's Dirty Pair. What would you expect them to do?

It's here that the story starts to pick up as during their bath they run into this guy who is sneaking around the base. Immediately falls into both of the bathtubs somehow being thrown from one to the other and then is arrested by the girls as they realise he was The Smuggler who got away from them and their first case. At this point they're attacked by what I can only describe as 'Xenomorph Beetle aliens'.

So  this creepy alien has a hunger for the Vizorium that plentiful on the planet.
And it seems that they were either genetically created or at least altered by this crazy scientist guy who's trying to burp some sort of Proto xenomorph human creature in a vain attempt to advance Humanity.
He's a complete nut who talks way too much in the film. It becomes kind of problematic as you're trying to read the subtitles what the guy is saying but you're also trying to watch scene itself.
I personally think they should have got the guys dialogue down, but then who am I.

The dirty pair is able to escape the aliens and maintain their prisoner at the same time. He berates them for being unprofessional in their work and you discover that the dirty Fair despite being very light-hearted are pretty darn easy to get under the skin of.

He then deliver some exposition and explains that he's here on his own personal mission. The girls decide to give him something of a chance and release him so that he may Aid them on there search to find the origin of these strange creatures.
Which leads into this ridiculous Laboratory where the guy is able to separate himself from the girls so he can go chase down and claim his own personal prize. Which it turns out is century-old bottle of wine (possibly based on the real life vintage ''Château Lafite Rothschild 1939'')

During this whole process our Nutty Professor will somehow coming to the conclusion that the people who have snuck into his base are in fact a weird mutation that was somehow born out of his lab. So he'll take DNA from them and stick them into those weird beetles Xenomorph aliens. Creating creepy ass aliens that have really feminine busty bodies.
I'm sure that's somebody's personal fantasy out there.

There's a whole mess of fighting afterwards it comes about partly due to the responsibilities of the Dirty Pairs ''Space Cat''. I'm sure the little fella has a name but I can't remember it.
For the most part the Dirty Pair and this other guy are able to destroy most of the aliens and are even able to acquire that rare bottle of wine.
That is after he gets stabbed through the gut by a laser sword.
We get some more fighting and the dirty pair is able to arrest both the mad scientist and the weird Butler (who had stolen the wine from the other guy to begin with.)

Now they're all flying off triumphant in there mission. That is until they decide to throw the empty bottle of wine down and it accidentally hits the laser sword that then hits these two other random tubes, somehow activating all the alien eggs on the planet the swarming the entire Celestial body with these horrible monster creatures that decide to destroy everyone they see. In a way the scientist actually achieved his goal and the Dirty Pair leave another planet completely destroyed.

In most films you'd see that as a bad ending. But for some reason it just doesn't matter here. Dirty Pair isn't really about any of that.
It's more about the experience of a good time and just taking in the spectacle of these weird and spectacular worlds alongside these two kooky, confident and very entertaining young women. One of which even has a romantic interest with that random guy. I don't know why. He's a complete butt dumpling in this movie, but I'm not Kei. I don't know how her mind works.

Conclusion: Incredibly fun and creative a little flick. It's got a wonderful art Direction. It's relatively entertaining and overall it's just an excuse to get immersed in this world again.
My only real issue with the film is that it had these weird inter bolts where the audio felt like if cut out.
I think they purposely left it empty but it's just felt a bit out of place with the rest of the film.

It's still League's better than Star Wars.
And it represents everything I wish that series of space fancy would become. Embrace the ludicrousness, embrace the cheesecake.
For God sakes try to have a little fun.
