It's been such a long time since I saw any of the ham hams. I forgotten most of their names. And I forgotten just how mundane the show can be.
In today's mundane episode; Laura and her friend (whose name I can't remember) are talking about a house party they're having later in the week.
While at the same time eating these little star shaped candies, that kind of look like those red peanut shell things you can get from the candy store.
I don't know what those things are actually called. I might have to look into it*. All I know is you shouldn't eat a bunch of them because the red dye doesn't go through the digestive system so well.
Anyways it's another one of those prosaic episodes for Laura, as she and her family aren't really doing anything.
I say that as if what the hamsters are doing any better. In fact they're doing the exact same thing as a family and it's supposed to be this kind of mirror image thing where they're both appreciating the same environment but from different perspectives.
Hamtaro is looking out of his cage at the weird little candies. He becomes overly fascinated by them. Either he wants to consume one or just want to see what the darn Things Are.
Hamtaro shortly after the girls leave, tries to reach for these candies. But is unable to because of both tall shelves and His short stature.
But he doesn't wish to give up just yet.
He goes to the club house where all the other hamsters are hanging about and informed them of these strange candies.
And because the hamsters have nothing else better with their life, they too become overly fascinated with Hamtaro descriptive candy.
The hamster Bijou has also seen these candies and is able to backup Hamtaro statement about they're fascinating description.
This is enough to get all the other hamsters committed to finding these star candies. And it becomes all the more important when several the Male hamsters realise they might have a better shot at wooing over some of the female hamsters if they can acquire one or two of these candies.
Or at least that's the idea.
Boss still has this whole motion of trying to win Bijoux affection and these two other hamsters are obsessed with this one female hamster that I don't think would ever give them the time of day even if they did give her a nice gift.
Now Boss decides to get a little cheeky and claim that he's already seen thousands of these candies.
All in a vain attempt to impress the hamsters.
Obviously he didn't really think this out very well because the hamsters immediately asks him where they can find these candies and he has to make up a story on the spot.
At first he just points to roll it's the roof of their little club.
Then implies that he was pointing to the sky, then he has to include that the sky has to be dark so that you can see them. It's all built up for a giant lie.
But luckily for Boss all the other hamster seem to be unaware of stars or even take on the notion that stars and the little candies are one in the same.
Now it's night time and there's a bunch of hamsters clamouring at the sky hoping that they can grab a star. Obviously they fail in their attempt but they seem to have a fun time of it regardless. Boss is off the hook for making up a story and all the hamsters have spent a nice evening together eating bits of scrap food and reminiscing about whatever it is hamsters do.
It's another one of those 'know nothing stories' where nothing is truly achieved and the story overall hasn't been pushed in any direction, so you just left there thinking ''what was the point of this?'' But then you remember that it's Hamtaro and there probably wasn't a point. You just stare at the silly looking hamsters and be happy for 20 minutes.
I still feel a little sorry for Bijou. She's just trying to have a fun time with the clubhouse and every single hamster keeps hitting on her (or at least a fair bit of them do). She has a little bit of affection for one hamster but it's Hamtaro.
The hamster who's thought process doesn't go beyond food and wondering what in God's name Laura is on about every time she starts blathering about a human issue.
*FRENCH BURNT PEANUTS!
They just might be the tastiest candies that have ever been. Well either that or the cookies and cream.
I feel like this episode had a very different structure in the Japanese. I have nothing to back that up as I've never looked up anything on the episode and I've never watched the Japanese version but there's a lot of weird animation with the hamsters in the first 10 minutes. And it implies that there might have been more attitude with the original story.
