"The Qualifier Begins"
Well here we are. We're at the point of no return. From this moment on the show will forever be cursed with utter stupidity and moronic phrases from our main protagonist.
In this episode of Beyblade Tyson and his friend Max are entering divisional chapters of their local contest to see if they qualify.
Given that they're the only characters with fluid animation and wacky pieces of hair you can kind of suspect who's going to make it.
But indeed there are a couple of obstacles.
Tyson has to deal with all the former members of Kai's stupid ''skull gang'' including this one guy who got kicked out previously and is now using a giant spinning top with a knife inserted in it to compete against all the other Beyblade people.
Apparently this is against the rules which is kind of funny to me as the tournaments doesn't seem to regulate any of the spinning tops before the games begin.
I guess they consider it more entertaining if people start breaking the rules and pushing the boundaries like an incredibly lame version of Rollerball.
Also it may not bode well for our protagonists if they're told they're not allowed to cheat anymore as they can go on all in all go on and on about how bad it is to use altered blades in their spinning tops but they literally have these omnipresent godlike beings living inside their toys which can manipulate the actions of their spinning top.
I said in a previous episode that it's a glorified form of cheating and I stand by that statement.
Anyways to return to the stupidity this is an episode. Tyson belittles his opponent for cheating, calming that thew guys top is ''crying'' because of it.
Implying that there's some sort of sentient nature to these spinning top toys. Now you might be able to make up an excuse if you're talking about the spinning tops that have literal Gods intermixed with them but everybody else just has a toy.
There's nothing mystifying about there hubby. It's literally just a spinning top and Tyson's talking about it as if he's referring to the heart of the cards from Yu-Gi-Oh. It's incredibly dumb and really idiotic when you hear him say it out loud.
"Draciel of Approval"
This is probably the first episode to have a proper competition between any of our true characters. It's mainly between Kai and Max and it's the ultimate dual of attack vs defence.
Honestly it's not bad. The actual fight between the spinning tops is kind of amusing to watch. There's something of an actual stakes going on in the game that isn't just pedantic stupidity on the part of the characters and there's a slightly altered Arena that makes for a kind of interesting mechanic with-in the game.
Essentially it's the giant cake and (the type you'd use to make angel food cake) where it pushes up in the middle and creates this weird Doughnut shape.
You have to get your spinning top to sit inside the middle and hope to God that the other person spinning top doesn't Knock You out. By doing this to acquire a certain amount of points and inevitably win the game.
Max is acting all kinds of cheerful throughout the game as well. He wants to be Kie's friend or at the very least he wants to be on good terms with him.
He also has those pendants from his mother that coincidentally has a piece of the spinning blade within it that house's one of these magical god like creatures.
Luckily for Max a strange attack not only destroys the top of his top that requires replacement but breaks the pendant in such a way that it releases the piece of plastic that's giving him an excuse to insert it on to he's bay blade. Now Max has a magical Godlike creature as well.
''Good for him'' I say. Even though he ends up losing the match he's still incredibly happy there's something endearing about that.
So I made the mistake of clicking on the English dub version of the show for a little bit.
And I forgot just how awful the English equivalent is.
Not only is a dialogue significantly worse, but there's a lot of the actual story that's been removed from the American version because they thought kids didn't care about actual character development.
I guess Max's mother doesn't really matter in the American version she's either dead and uncared about or alive and unmentioned. Either way it sounds far more insulting than the original version.
Also there's a sentient computer for some reason?
It's not present at all in the Japanese version. But it sure does make for some mindless chitchat and easy to fill in non animated dialogue within the American version.
I think the show in generals kind of dumb but the English version makes it absolutely ridiculous. Now I'm questioning why I liked it at all back then.
