The Kentucky Fried Movie. For the longest time this was one of those weird films that I remember hearing about never bothered to watch.
And now I'm rectified the problem.
I'm very happy that I did, this movie is hilarious. Though I'm also kind of happy that I took my time. A vast chunk of this is all just reference humour and various pop culture references from the 70s some of the 60s and a few things from the 50s. Watching it years ago I don't think I would have appreciated half of the Jokes.
Which does give me something of a dual Mind Set On the movie.
If you knew nothing about 70 Cinema and you sat down and watch this film you to get a chuckle out of it. But I suspect large portions of the movie would be disinterested in or even confusing to you.
In a way I think this creates a problem.
As time progresses some of these jokes will become less relevant.
It's what happens to most humour. But because Kentucky Fried Movie doesn't really have and establish a story or set characters. It has to rely on the base humour itself.
In a way it's an incredibly lucky film as American Society (at least in the popculture sense) hasn't really progressed all that much since the 1970s.
We're still making horrible advertisements about making your home smell fresh, we still have the same weird attitudes towards sex and impotence problems. We still make cheesy action flicks with awful dialogue and stupid plots.
But at some point we're going to hit a disconnect with the 1970s and a fair bit of Kentucky Fried Movie will be just strange and alien aside from those who take up an interest in that time. This is where films like Airplane or the Naked Gun tend to do a little better. Many of their jokes will become old and irrelevant time but there still an actual story in a plot for you to follow. It doesn't purely rely on Comedy it's just built upon comedy.
But still I say all this like it's a negative.
It's not.
There's nothing wrong with Kentucky Fried Movie.
It's comedic it's enjoyable. Somebody somewhere will always be laughing at it for some stupid reason. And at the end of the day there's always going to be Big Jim Slade. A character and an act that will never stop being both wonderful and funny at the same time. I suspect it will go on for the ages.
I had originally wondered why they didn't make a full Bruce Lee spoof movie. But then I remember that Kung Fu films love to make fun of themselves and there's so many comedic versions out there that it might make a spoof movie kind of irrelevant.
