I had no idea that Cool Breeze was going to be a heist movie.
And I feel like a right idiot thinking about that now.
Just look at the poster.
He's going to steal 3 million dollars in diamonds and he's holding a bunch of diamonds in his hand.
What was I expecting?
God who knows.
Unfortunately a lot of these early 70s cheap productions could lead to just about anywhere.
An action film could turn into a poker game that last for 30 minutes and followed up by two guys getting drunk and wandering out into the abyss.
Another movie with a romance promise turns into a roadtrip film. You really roll the dice with some of these films and unfortunately they can't all be winners.
Case in point 'Cool Breeze'.
Start that well enough.
A big ticket criminal is getting out of prison and he already has ideas about his next Heist.
A low-level thug is running away from the cops and trying to cover his trail so that he doesn't get arrested for yet another strange crime. A bunch of other people are looking for any opportunity to make a couple of bucks in this incredibly turbulent time when police pressure is turning up in a corrupt police captain is starting to systematically shut down all these bookie businesses to make his district look better.
So much information, so many characters and unfortunately most of it isn't developed.
The Heist itself is surprisingly underdeveloped. You think it's going to turn into an Ocean's 11 movie where they go through hiring all the individual crew members give each one a little back story so you understand their character and then show off all the weird gizmos and techniques are going to use to take down the job.
We get a little bit of that here.
But the characters are all just kind of flat.
The most interesting aspect of the whole Heist is this weird laser weapon they use. It's able to blast through a reinforced vault door.
The most interesting aspect of the whole Heist is this weird laser weapon they use. It's able to blast through a reinforced vault door. But sadly after the heist the film just lingers on. Everybody starts to betray one another, the police are getting small leads to hunt everyone down and it's all played really plainly with little to no action Awards drama.
There's just so many little moments that could have been improved on.
The movie needed to go one of two directions. It either needs to cut down some of the secondary characters so the run time would be a little smaller or had to give more time to developing the characters that had. It's unfortunately left right in the middle being too long for a short action film and too short for a dramatic epic.
It does have one unique moment though. Before the heist starts one of the guys hands out a bunch of masks some of which have Richard Nixon's face on them.
And this has become a Trope in movies today. There are tons of films that use Richard Nixon image as a disguise. And I'm wondering if this is the first film to do it.
