Film Summary DCXXXI (Prix de Beauté)

A young woman wishes to enter a beauty contest much to her fiance's displeasure.
Not only does she sneakily post her photo into the competition results. But she does phenomenally well.
So well that she ends up in a semi finals where she sent off to Madrid and then wins the Miss Europe pageant.

So I'm just going to put this out here.
This should have been the entire movie.

The whole film should have revolved around the trials and tribulations of this young woman entering a contest that she was unsure of.
She's even hesitant at the very end when she wants the photos back as she doesn't want to upset her fiance.
But her boss insists that she goes for it anyways because she's a fan favourite in the local area and in reality it is the thing she wanted to do.
She likes to show off and there's no better way to do that today Beauty competition.

The whole movie could have been about her trials and tribulations as she deals with other competing women both kind and manipulative.
Has dealings with men some of which would also be kind others creepy as they try to hit on her. Maybe have the entire subplot involving her fiance as his opinions change throwout the competition or maybe he tries to find her because she left on a train without even saying goodbye.
Honestly there are so many venues a story like this could have gone and the movie could open up to a whole slew of different stories.

As it is it's not a particularly bad one.
She goes out for a competition, she wins the competition (a little too easily) and then she kind of has dealings with these other guys at the competition. But it doesn't amount to much because she's almost immediately back home with her fiance who finds her and threatens to leave her if she's not back on the train with him.
There's a whole whack of drama we could have had here too. Dealing with this man that she loves but ultimately is not suitable for her or maybe even trying to convince him that this competition might be good for and that he should get over his jealousy and just accept her for who she is.
A little bit more trust could be involved knowing that your fiance isn't going to cheat on you.
Once again a thousand different story venues filled with drama and romance and possibly even comedy.
But we're just let down here. And we don't get to explore really any of that besides this weird attempt at a love triangle where this other guy tries hitting on her even when she's left the competition and she starts to have second thoughts because she wants to go back to it.

I also have problems with the audio although I'm not sure that's the fault of the movie.
Apparently there are a few different versions of this film floating around out there and some of them have really weird dubbed over language because of the poorly implemented talkin segments introduced within the film.
As this was one of the very first films in French Cinema to have proper speaking roles given that it's from 1930.
But apparently there are different versions out there where the audio is mingling better and some of which have even been redone completely as to sync up the audio properly with the actions of the people.
However there are also other odd Cuts in this film as if somebody had cut out certain chunks to shorten the length.

That's all external of the film. The movie as it plays isn't really responsible for that.
So maybe there's a better version out there without the weird editing and sound problems and I suspect it would be far more entertaining to watch.
I also like to think that there's another version with an extra 20 minutes giving more character the secondary people within the show. But I'm holding my breath for that one. That might just be wishful thinking on my part.
It's technically an okay movie I think it misses the mark a little bit and I wish there was more to it.
But it still has its fun moments there's something kind of an exhilarating about seeing a bunch of people constantly chewing on for their favourite candidate in the beauty competition and watching this little arrow fill up with points which is measured in Applause for an individual person.
