So what happens when you take 'The Outsiders' and 'Grease' then mix them into a fever-dream?
The answer is The Wanderers.
This really weird 60 style Greaser gang film about a group of delinquent kids roaming around the streets of New York City.
There getting involved in street fights, defending themselves against rival gangs, starting beef with a black gang in their classroom and then also going to parties hooking up with random women and having a strange connection to this Mafioso crime family that wears a bunch of giant Hawaiian shirts. And honestly there's so many other things going on too and half of it doesn't even feel connected.
If anything you could say this whole film feels disconnected but in a kind of good way.
If this film was more down-to-earth I would complain that it was confused as to what type of a movie it wants to be. Because you have all these different plot elements intermixing and half of them don't feel like they should exist with the others.
Like a gang fight that turns into a football match that's then overrun by a strange group of what I can only describe as 'Underground wacko Catholics' and I only bring up the Catholic angle because it's the only real characterisation we get with this insane community of people going about killing those who roam into their neighbourhood. They come off like zombies or those weird subhuman people from the Omega Man.
Either way there the most disconnected point of this whole movie and that in a movie with a bald headed gang that accidentally joins the Marine Corps and roams around causing trouble.
I really want a movie revolving around Dolph Sweet's character. Just this kind of sloppy fat mobster guy working out of a bowling alley and dealing with all kinds of ridiculous things. Or hell we could just be this man eating dinner I don't give a damn I just want more. More I say
One thing I also really liked about the film is the dorky naïve girl who hooks up with a greaser doesn't actually end up with him in the end. In fact she just kind of wanders off at some point after having an affair with a guy.
Therefore showing that she's the only person in this whole group didn't fall into any stereotype. Or at least on the nose stereotype like everyone else.
