Pre-watching: I want to talk a bit about my interest in Teen Titans before watching the movie. That would most cases I wouldn't bother with this for it has no real effect on the film itself.
But Teen Titans Go is an interesting little creature.
It's this odd continuation of an already-established cartoon from many years previously in which they were able to get back most of the voice talent and I think even a few of the writers from the Teen Titans series that came out back in the early 2000s.
In doing so it had an opportunity to continue on the story of what is arguably the most popular rendition of Teen Titans.
Like so many other people I was introduced to this superhero team threw that cartoon. So I was kind of excited by the idea of a new Teen Titan series (especially considering the end of the whole thing on a pretty lack Luster cliffhanger.)
But then it was shown that this cartoon really wasn't a continuation of the previous story. It was a kind of recreation the Teen Titans with some of the already established character development and storyline from the previous series; But ultimately an entirely new show that had nothing to do directly with the ending of the previous one.
And more so it was this ultra comedic younger Audience leaning show that was committed to slapstick humour and really fast committed jokes. With a the more upbeat setting and colour palettes that made everything look and feel like a Powerpuff Girls show.
And I'll admit that I was a little disappointed by this when I first saw it. As like so many other people I was hoping for a continuation.
But unlike so many others I didn't let it get me down.
I accepted that this show existed for what it was and that it is ultimately not my cup of tea. But an okay experience all the same.
Unfortunately a large group of ''fans'' went on hating this show in a way that is unbecoming of any group of fans I've ever seen.
And I've seen an awful lot of fandoms get mad over pointless things in the years. Most of which is overly exaggerated. But hear it was Next Level.
Teen Titans Go became the most dislikes cartoon by an incredibly large group of people. Many of which have never even seen the show, they're just jumped on the bandwagon of hate. So unfortunately that creates a bit of a stigma with the show. A stigma that I don't think it actually serves but all the less it's there.
I only blabber on about all of this so that anybody reading can get my perspective. I'm going into the movie expecting a cinematic experience not to rip this film apart.
I don't have any high expectations for it but I also don't want it to fail. Like anything else I watch I am hoping that this is good. Or at the very least enjoyable.
The Film:
This is just like the X-Men apocalypse movie only in the reverse. With X-Men it was about 50% good and 50% bad. It was peppered in such a weird way that I ultimately got tired and annoyed with it.
Becoming incredibly unpleased by a movie.
Whereas the 'Teen Titans Go to the Movies' is filled with little problems and a load of Comedy that's not really my thing.
But It ultimately works out because it's structured really well and the comedy (though not to my personal enjoyment) had just enough little one-off zingers or offsetting moments that it kept me mildly amused.
What's save this movie for me in the end are the characters. All the Teen Titan characters are over-the-top and Incredibly silly but within these hyper flamboyant sponges of energy lies the real characters from the original Teen Titans show. With just enough of the personality and personal connection that I found myself quite happy whenever they overcame an obstacle.
Starfire still has her silly but loving nature mixed with uncanny sincerity. Beast Boy is still eccentric and kind. Raven is still dour and monotone but with just enough genuine kindness that you root her.
It was a lot of fun watching this big budgeted cartoon Hollywood film ultimately make fun of itself in a kind of condemning way but not to such an extent that you stop believing them.
And it was just nice to see something of DC get a more positive and upbeat spin with in the Cinematic setting.
Even within a giant theatrical setting they still wouldn't use the name 'Deathstroke the Terminator'. They could have easily gotten away with it here as they made plenty of other jokes that were just as crude or intense as his name.
This was a nice and enjoyable movie. I was expecting to come out of this with a kind of neutral response.
Where I would say that it was neither good nor bad but perfectly serviceable. But I kind of liked it. I'm not sure I'd want to sit through the whole thing again as it does feel its length however there's enough here to be enjoyable and it's filled to the nines with Teen Titans references, DC references and even a few subtle jabs at the Teen Titan Go show itself. Including making fun of its waffle scene which became the most hated Thing by those unhappy angry cartoon '''fans''' from earlier.
Honestly I was fine with the waffles.
It was a thing they made reference to in the Teen Titans original animated show as well. So you know how it works out.
Not sure if they ever referenced waffles in the comics. I'll have to look into that.
It's kind of weird as this movie doesn't feel like it's connected at all to the Teen Titans Go show. Obviously it takes plenty of references from it but it is it's own thing. It pretends like none of the other shows exist but instead the Teen Titans are just kind of there as a 2ed grade team.
Beast Boy was living in a dumpster? I guess the Doom Patrol doesn't exist in this universe. It might subtract from the whole were a team thing and we need each other to be anything relevant.
Given that Changeling could easily go back to former teams if he needed to. Though I know he doesn't want to, so you know they could have stuck with that. Oh no I'm nitpicking. I'll stop now.
