Film Summary DCLXXXII (Men In Black)

So I decided after several years to re-watch the original Men In Black.
And I have to admit, I didn't have all that high expectations for it.
This came out at the same time as ''wild wild west'' and a bunch of other middle-of-the-road disinteresting 90s films.
I was expecting 'Men In Black' to join them in that regard.

How happily wrong I was.

This movie is surprisingly funny, it's fantastically well paced. The chemistry between Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith is surprisingly great.
It's just a really fun story.
There isn't a single this interesting or unlikable character.

It's just a really fun story.
There isn't a single this interesting or unlikable character.
It's ideally set up.
We have an old already established cool-headed character and a young hot-headed energetic character, kind of butting heads with each other but ultimately working to solve a problem.
And even then it's not much of a problem. The main plot of this movie doesn't affect our main characters until about an hour ahead.

And even then, one of these characters isn't all that bothered about it.
That might be my favourite thing about the whole film.
The fact that the organization that's meant to keep earth safe and safeguard it's people (both human and alien alike) is surprisingly disconnected and disinterested in its own existence.
If the world ends tomorrow everyone is just kind of willing to go along. In for a penny in for a pound kind of thing.
It has such a great mixture of both conventional storytelling and Fantastical elements. You never grow bored of the alien CGI or kooky plot points and you never become restless with the more down-to-earth human elements of the movie.

So Will Smith plays a cop who's able to chase down a Super Alien. This gets the attention of an organization that keeps track of said aliens.
They decide to recruit him after a mock-screening and he's put on the job with a veteran agents to go in deal with all kinds of small-time alien problems.
Such as glorified parole officer for certain aliens who are only supposed to live within a certain District of the United States or retrieving a small marble-sized Galaxy to ensure the planet doesn't blow up.
Both assignments are given the same amount of gravity. While all this is happening another strange alien is trying to capture said marble Galaxy, so they can leave the planet and wage some mysterious war with another group of aliens that has nothing to do with Humanity.
Never has Earth felt so insignificant within its own massive well-connected story.

Men In Black is still a great film. It's held up really well, it's CG effects are noticeable of course but not detrimental. It's all around really enjoyable.
