Film Summary DCLXXXV (Sonic Rebuilt)

It seems the fine people over at 3GI decided to make another 'parody' film.
First time around it was one of Shrek.
This time they went with this Sonic movie from the mid-90s.
Originally I was going to question why they would go with that, but it's kind of evident.

It's a big fun animated feature revolving around a very popular franchise.
So why not contact every cartoonist and animator you can think of and have everyone contribute a little something fun.
It also explains why they're using the original audio as opposed to Shrek where they replaced everything.
If you want to get animators on your side, you don't want to burden them down with an entirely different format that they may not have any experience with.

The end result is a fairly amusing and surprisingly well put together retelling of that original Sonic story.
Which is fascinating to me given that that original story was just a couple of episodes from a failed television show stuck together and re-worked to make it into a film.

So to see these countless hours of re-creation by tens if not hundreds of artists it's just a bit boggling. And it's pretty cool overall.

and it's weird how this retelling is played a lot more straight then Shrek was.
With Shrek there was a lot of deviation and overall ludicrousy to how they went about telling their story.
And that made for a hell of a lot of fun, watching some really surreal content revolving around and otherwise mediocre CG film from 20 years ago.
Where as sonic seems a bit more controlled. In some ways it's not quite as entertaining as 'Shrek Retold' and it's nowhere near as comedic (tho it still funny). However with a lot of fun just to watch for various animators.
And some of the people that decided to paint themselves up like a blue Hedgehog run Orange Box to really fill in the rest. Including one person who put in crap ton of time by using his (or her) own cats.

You know the weird thing is I was planning on we watching this movie at some point anyways. I've always had a fascination with the Sonic movie.
20% of this movie is flat-out really good and then there's another 20% that's okay and an unfortunate 60% really doesn't work out.
Partly because it's not really meant to me a movie and partly because it's just kind of tacky.
I wanted to re-watch it in the original Japanese just to see if the voice acting could improve it somewhat.
I like the idea of a more serious Sonic film and of course he can't get that anymore because Sonic has devolved completely down to joke status.
Ironically just like Shrek itself. Though with least Sonic started out for something a little bit more tangible than its green ogord cousin (or perhaps redneck uncle.)

So how's surprised was I when I saw this little fan project come about. I figured it'd be the perfect excuse to re-watch it again. Maybe seeing it through a thousand different little lenses would somehow improve the experience. And in some ways it does.

Seeing some of these scenes reanimated threw other spectacular artist really emphasize just how pretty this film can be.
But then also seeing people making fun of the campie (often confusing) dialogue and story emphasizes just how bad the rest of it is.
It really makes me have to admit just how bad this film really is. That doesn't stop me from liking it. Hell that doesn't stop me from kind of liking Shrek, though that one's purely irony at this point.
