What an incredibly silly gamble of a film.
Like sit back and really think about it.
A pirate movie with an incredibly high budget based on a 1960s theme park ride with an Aztec treasure curse that sounds like something out of an Indiana Jones flick.
It's just the perfect recipe for disaster.
And yet they pulled it off.
I've heard some people credited mainly to Johnny Depp's performance of Captain Jack Sparrow.
And I'm inclined to agree with them to a point. He really is the source of energy in this movie (too bad the real life Johnny Depp turned into an alcoholic they could write was character.)
You look around and everybody else with the performance and they're just technically fine. The guy who plays Barbarossa is pretty fun but he's your over-the-top villain you can't hold the entire movie.
You know one of the things I've heard so many people say about this movie is that it feels really un-Disney.
Mostly down to its darker tone and overall mannerism.
But re-watching it now I have to admit it feels in a lot of the niches really well.
You got the strange family Dynamic with Elizabeth and her father who both feel like they don't belong to their appropriate age. An attracted, nice but kind of simplistic and boring protagonist man. The villain who is over-the-top and ridiculous. All the characters have that weird loopy attitude to them that you seem so many other Disney movies. We even get our Tweedledee and Tweedledum characters twice over in this movie, two of which are pirates and two of which were part of the royal Navy.
Oh and let's not forget about the snobbish upper class arrogant military man who ends up becoming a bigger villain than the actual baddie of the movie towards the end.
If he's not like Gaston or Clayton (from Tarzan) then what else could he be. Once again, same kind of character archetype.
I swear all these Disney films kind of start to blending at one point and yet most of them are still fairly entertaining.
But still overall it's a fun movie. It's fun watching a group of weird Pirates and Aristocrats running around, hunting for a ship and dealing with a supernatural curse.
And it's amusing seeing Jack Sparrow attempt to talk his way out of just about every situation. The only ends up fighting two or three times and he ends up losing in both scenarios.
But really I'm just super happy that they never made another movie after this.
Nope they didn't turn it into a needless franchise that became overly bloated and Confused. They just left it alone as one fun and amusing film, never to be tainted by the thrill of more money.
