It's time to read about Captain Marvel. A character that I know very little about.
and it doesn't matter which variation of DC or Marvel Comics 'Captain Marvel' were talking about.
They're all equally Obtuse in my mind.
The best information I have, has to do with the legality of the character over how they act in the comics.
And how Marvel Comics has purposely scooped up the name as to deprive DC of one of their most lucrative titles.
You could argue that it's a dick move on Marvel's part.
Which it is.
However DC Comics originally sued the creators of Captain Marvel way back in either the late thirties or early forties. thus eliminating the character and giving future Marvel Comics it's opportunity to take it.
So really it's just the two big comic book companies acting like giant jackasses and screwing each other over.
No love lost there.
Anyways this comic book revolves around Carol Danvers. The newest Captain Marvel to my knowledge.
She originally was Miss Marvel.
For a time and the only thing I knew about her, is that she was in a coma for several years after Rogue (of the X-Men) accidentally made physical contact with her and more or less stole her powers.
Or I guess in a way; acquired her powers, as they both still have them. Only one of them ended up in a coma.
But that doesn't matter here.
I'm not even sure that storyline is prevalent at all within this comic.
Instead we get right into the action with Captain Marvel and Captain America fighting some Giants lunar fiend villain claiming that he needs the moon power.
Honestly I kept thinking about Sailor Moon during the fight and how he's defeated when Captain Marvel uses a piece of her super enhanced clothing to smother his face and make him pass out. Which then reminded me of Superman as his cape is more or less as indestructible as he is.
this Sparks off a bit of publicity as Captain America's asked about his new partner. He's hesitant for the time as he's not sure if Captain Marvel actually take the title or not.
She thinks it's dishonorable to take on the name of the last Captain Marvel.
But Captain America makes it pretty darn clear that the guy had his own life outside of the name and that his superhero Persona is more of a mantle than personal identity.
So Captain Marvel takes the name and goes on a big flight out into near space, where she reminisces about her power and being able to do anything.
It's after all of this that we get into the more intriguing aspect of the comic. That being her attempt at breaking an old speed record within a military aircraft.
She was a pilot before acquiring her powers and apparently a darn good one.
So she's talking with an old friend about bygone days and their times in military service.
they reminisce about their past and how the two met and how they were both known for Taking Chances while in flight.
This transition to a panel where Captain Marvel is flying an old plane to its breaking point near the stratosphere.
The idea is to break an old record set by a former friend.
And she's able to reach the record, and then decides to push a plane just a little bit more. This causes a stalling within the plane and everything starts to freeze over.
As her plane spins out she tries to regain control. She's transported away several years back to presumably World War II, where she's captured by a group of Japanese soldiers, thinking her an enemy combatant.
Captain Marvel has no clue about most of this at the time. Only that something has gone horribly wrong and that she can't speak a word of Japanese. So trying to understand her captours is difficult. This leads to her meeting a group of military Commandos who came to rescue her. Thinking she's one of their men who had been shot down over enemy territory.
The group starts to reminisce as they move on through the forest back to base camp and Captain Marvel starts to contemplate just what it is she's in.
She's pretty sure she's gone back in time and not so sure what she should do about it. She's afraid scrwing up history if she starts flying around or interacting with the war. But then becomes forced to do so anyways as a giant spaceship pops out of nowhere and tries to kill them all. So she decides; ''To hell with the future'' and just goes into the fight.
That's about as far as I got in the comic. Overall it's fine.
The story moves along well enough, it gives you just enough detail to understand the characters without needless padding. The art works pretty good too.
A little muted in colour for my liking, but nothing technically wrong.
