Film Summary DCCXIX (Hellboy II: The Golden Army)

Hellboy and the Golden Army. Or as I like to look at it, The film that took way too much inspiration from Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.

First Hellboy had a very unique an individual style to it. Or at least in comparison to other big Studio films.
It Had a strange dark, Gothic Noir Style. Peppered with the occasional bit of humour and some fun Supernatural Monsters, Just to add in a bit of flair.
But overall there was a sombre attitude to it.
Than along comes the Golden Army which raps up the comedy. Throws crap tons of fantasy and reminds me way too much of thos modern Hobbit films.
Which is especially concerning given that they wanted to give Guillermo del Toro the rains in The Hobbit movies to begin with, and my God how I wish that would have happened.

With the Golden Army everything just feels stagnant. I'm not really that invested in the fantasy elves or their problems as I came here wanting to see more Hellboy. I want to see him go up against more urban dark fantasy monsters. Maybe vampires or a Frankenstein kind of thing.
He works better with characters that belong in a Hammer film as opposed to a JRR Tolkien story. And it's not even that it's all that bad here. He's inevitable fight with the evil elf at the end is funny enough.
It just seems like something better could have been done. And so many Paw Points in this movie don't go anywhere. Hellboy at one point reveals himself to the open-world and nothing comes of it.
You could have made a whole movie with him just dealing with publicity or having the organization be under Scruples or even attack from other entities. But instead we end up getting this drama between Hellboy and his girlfriend which could make for an interesting enough story in its own right. If it wasn't just an exact repeat from the last film. It just feels like we're retreating water.

And you know the biggest problem is I watch this film about a month ago and nothing really stuck out with me. I like the mechanical German man and I kind of like the supernatural World in Disguise of the normal world.

I think there was a good story that could have been made there. HellBoy goes to a weird Supernatural place and feels like he finally belongs. He convinces his girlfriend to comes along and she still can seen an outsider.
Although she's possessive of Supernatural powers and thus an outcast in the regular world, she still looks like a basic human. So she can't really fit in what the Fantasy Place either.
It's a great opportunity to have the story of conflict between the two romantic leads.
A Story about acceptance and finding your place in the world And just trying to make the best of it.
Maybe have a love conquers all scenario where they both decide that the world aren't made for them, but as long as they're with each other they can make the best of it. Or maybe you can just fight giant golden robots. What do I know.

The film is technically fine, it's a bit of a letdown. It's very clear from 1 segment in the middle of the movie that there was going to be a third film with a more prominent villain but that never came to be.
