Television Summary XXXVIII (Monster Rancher Ep:1-3)

If Pokemons the gold medal and digimons the silver, than Monster Rancher is the kind of unknown bronze medal.

People know what Pokemon is. People have heard the word Digimon.
Monster Ranchers?
A few people might say they've heard of it, but for the most part you're getting into obscure Japanese cartoon territory.
At least for a general audience.
And in a way it's a little too bad. Monster Ranchers pretty good.
Heck, out of the three that I just mentioned it's the one I seen the whole of.
I didn't watch all of Pokemon or Digimon when they came out.

I saw all of this.
I don't remember anything about it besides all the characters going to a food machine and getting their favourite meals out of a Star Trek device.
The big rock guy literally got to eat a big rock. I'm still confused by that.

The series follows the adventures of a boy named Genki. Who you think would have his name changed to Gary, Gus or Gregory in the English translation.
But no.
His name is left alone and he gets to be a weird Whimsical kid who unlike his Digimon and Pokemon counterparts is completely and utterly at home in a Strange New World. To which he just got dropped into.

I was expecting a few episodes of him being a drab confused idiot. But he just jumps right in there.
He sees a raptor, he kicks him in the face with his skate shoes.
He sees a person in distress, he goes to help them out.
He's high strong and he doesn't care.
Kind of annoying sometimes but honestly what else do you expect from a 10 year old kid.

He got transported into a strange Magic World via his PlayStation 1
prototype video game.
They don't strictly call it a PlayStation 1 but that's clearly what it is.
And he's able to use his CD Rom (that came along with them) to create a weird little monster that follows him around and continuously wants to eat.
He's also joined by a girl named Holly and a strange little eyeball man that looks like a digimon mixed with Pac-Man.
Together they have to find a magical Phoenix. Which will miraculously fix the world and uncorrupt all the evil monsters being controlled by a guy 'Moo' of all things.

The whole show as this kind of He-Man feel to it and I'm all for it.
It doesn't want to bring you down with needless drama or depressing confused kids who just want to go back home.
Our protagonist couldn't give two craps about home. He's where he wants to be and he's making the best of it.
And everyone else is kind of just doing their thing as well. They're literally all going on an adventure because the girl Holly lived in a village where a myth about a phoenix was told to her. So everyone else just kind of joins cuz what else is there to do. There's evil on the loose and someone has to fight it.
