Film Summary DCCLXXXVII (The Ghost and the Darkness)

Sweet Lord everybody has fantastic teeth.

All perfectly straight, perfectly whitened, gorgeous pairs of dentures. The medical plans in southeast Africa must be boundless.

So the story follows the adventures of the semi realistic affairs of a man named John Henry Patterson who was involved in the hunt down of 2 man-eating Lions who killed a surprisingly large amount of people at a railroad construction camp.

His original story alongside the film exaggerated the number of kills committed by the Lions.
Even with the most conservative estimates it's still over 20 people which is a pretty ridiculous amount. The movie has a kind of supernatural tone to it.
The lions are portrayed as spiritual beings who hunts like men and have specific targets they wish to bring down.
It all sounds a hell of a lot more interesting than it actually is.
At the end of the day you just have five or six key actors who are giving decent performances. But their Characters feel shallow and extremely stereotypical. That wouldn't be much of a problem if the movie was having a bit more fun with itself.
It's all very basic and there's nothing all that spectacular that sticks out of the film.
They did use real life lions and supposedly they filmed on location. So that's kind of interesting.

I remember being quite enthralled with this film when I saw it 20 years ago. Looking at it now it just doesn't hold up.
It feels like it belongs in the same universe as Indiana Jones, but it doesn't have the spirited fun of an Indiana Jones flick and it's too competent to be comedic so it just kind of lingers in the middle being technically okay but nothing more.

In the middle of the film Michael Douglas (who supposed to be super professional Hunter required to take care of the lions) Ames this ridiculous pistol at a man's head.
I honestly thought it was an outdated Flintlock gun originally. It looks like it was 30 years too late to be in the possession of a man in this particular business.
But it turns out the pistol is accurate.

The strange-looking contraction (a Howdah Pistol)
was in fact used by hunters all around as a last resort when dealing with Wild game.
So that was kind of cool.
What I thought was a weird inaccuracy turns out to be plausible and very realistic.
