So one might wonder. ''Why not watch the original Pocahontas.''
Well truth be told I don't remember liking that movie.
It was slow, it's boring and now as an adult I could recognize how utterly ridiculous it is. Especially if you want to look at it from a historical context.
That doesn't make any excuse for watching a second movie which somehow is even more boring, more pointless and we won't even get into historical accuracy.
I think Pocahontas did go to the new world in real life. She might have been kidnapped or forced on that though and she died pretty soon afterwards contrasting some god-forsaken old world disease.
Anyways this movie couldn't get Mel Gibson so instead they got his brother.
And to be honest I didn't tell the difference in their voice acting when I first heard them.
Although I did realize how badly put in Mel Gibson's brother was.
He sounds flat and disconnected from his character model, why'll everybody else (though not great) at least feels like they belong in the world.
He dies at the beginning of the movie and he stays dead for so long that I honestly thought he was really not going to come back.
Which would have been really amusing having your main romantic lead just died randomly and being replaced by some other guy.
He's still replaced in that sense.
The whole romance from the last movie between Pocahontas and John Smith! Yeah that's not a thing anymore.
She's hooked up with some other guy who's somehow and even more lame than John Smith and they have absolutely no workable chemistry. In fact this whole movie is devoid of character or agency.
Or even all that much of a story.
It's an hour and 14 minutes and it feels every freaking minute.
We could have cut all the stupid animal banter out and probably saved about 10 minutes of film. But then it wouldn't be a movie and they could sell it to a gullible public who wants to see more Pocahontas. So what are you going to do.
The animation is lacking, the musical numbers are awful and overall it's just kind of mundane from an artistic point of view.
And say what you will about the first Pocahontas. But it is a very pretty movie.
This one does not capture any of that.
Some of the backdrops look okay, especially in the first scene of a London bridge being filled with random houses. That whole part looks okay, but the characters running around on it and everything afterwards is just so lacking in style.
It's Disney's video Market animation and that works fine enough if you're making a Hercules cartoon or Goof Troop. But Pocahontas kinda needs a bit more effort.
You need your A game in order to make that work.
I'm pretty sure hummingbirds can't survive in the winter.
Overall it's not a very good movie. A boring dis-interesting cash grab.
The only character I liked was Uttamatomakkin (and you better believe I have to look at that a spell that name.)
He doesn't have really anything to do, in fact his entire character becomes pointless after the first 15 minutes in the New World.
But having him there is a kind of Silent anger to everything else around him is oddly amusing.
